While I hope they don't kill Bond off in the next film, I'm not against them bringing in a new character, be it Lashana Lynch's character or someone else, as the new 007 for a few films. I think it could be a fun change of pace to continue to explore this universe with a different character and could lead to some new and interesting stories. Plus it gives Bond an opportunity to rest for a few years to make people want to see more adventures with the character again. Then a few years down the road you could bring Craig back or have someone new in the role as Bond. To me, it would be more about the execution of the idea of having someone new be a 007 then the idea itself being bad.

Brosnan's run definitely wasn't a reboot but a continuation of the series with all different characters, including replacing M with Dame Judy Dench, which throws continuity out of order as Bond meets her in goldeneye as a seasoned agent "a throwback to the Cold War" and the Craig era M who made him a 00.

I hope to God that they don't kill Craig's Bond off and replace him with the female 007. Danny Boyle was replaced as the original Director because of creative differences, one of which was the rumour he refused to kill James Bond off. I think the best format they have used is continuing the series with a new actor to play the character and maybe freshen things up with a plot twist now and again. I think the franchise may have run it's course, but a new franchise with new characters won't work. Bring back Modesty Blaise if that's the case.

I always thought the Bond series may end, but they have always refreshed the actors when they get too old to keep things fresh, much as they did with Tarzan.
It was early in preproduction/scripting that the idea was considered (also Minister Grey is in the film, another crossover from the Moore films) but Cubby dismissed it early on.

Apart from the M thing, which was really because Campbell wanted Judi to stay and no other reason really, the Craig films are clearly a seperate continuity, as he meets Moneypenny for the first time in Skyfall and is not familiar with Spectre and Blofeld (Well, apart from knowing them as Quantum and Hans Oberhauser). Q's a bit of a ? because it's implied in SKYFALL that Bond might've have a previous Quartermaster that was killed in Silva's attack.

It's certainly possible that Craig's Bond did have some of the missions but modernized, probably between QOS and Skyfall as he seems to be a more seasoned agent in the latter (and it's even commented that he's getting a bit old!). The Goldeneye reloaded and 007 Legends game ran with that explanation (although Legend's OHMSS doesn't work for obvious reasons). Also kind of explains how he has the Goldfinger car in Skyfall.

I ordered Nobody Does It Better: Complete Uncensored, Unauthorized Oral History of James Bond but accidentally shipped it to my parents' address instead of my current address. So while I wait for that to arrive, I have been re-reading Moonraker. I still really enjoy this novel and think it is one of Fleming's best Bond books. Fleming breaks away from some of his typical Bond trends with this book which adds to my enjoyment of it, so as offering more insight into the more mundane aspects of Bond's life and the structure of the novel. Also interesting to note that Fleming based this novel on a movie script he had been trying to develop.

I agree, Bond seems a bit more human in this novel and seems to show genuine feelings to his female companion. I think I will get the chance to reread the novels during this time. Looking forward to it.

I would also suggest (if you haven't already) that you delve into some of the none-Fleming novels. Some of them are mediocre but some are really good

Yeah, one thing I've always preferred about Fleming's Bond compared to most versions of movie Bond is that he feels more human in general. Fleming's Bond questions the actions he has to take as a 007 and the job really seems to take a toll on him. I feel like most versions of movie Bond, besides maybe Craig's version, ignores this component of the Fleming books.

My current plan is to read through all of the Fleming novels, since I think I have only read half of them, and then go in order through the none-Fleming novels. And read Oral history of Bond whenever it arrives.

And I completely agree with you about the movie version of Moonraker. It's probably my least favorite Bond movie because it butchers a great Bond novel and basically becomes Star Wars at the end. And I never liked that they basically made Jaws a good guy at the end.

That's really sad to hear. Two actresses for the Connery era have passed away in less than a year. She was fantastic in Goldfinger.

Nanja Regin (The girl in the pre-credits sequence) and Tania Monnet (Tilly) also died Spring of last year. I think pretty much all the Bond girls from Moore forward with the exception of Cassandra Harris are still around; and from Connery, Ursula Andress (Honey), Daniela (Tatianna), Luciana (Fiona) Shirley Eaton (Jill) Marine Beswick (Zora and Paula) Akiko (Aki) and Mie Hama (Kissy) are still around.

The secondary Bond girl in OHMSS, Angela Scoular, died in 2011.

I'm begun to listen to a new (new for me that is) JB podcast called 'The 00 Files'. They do all sorts including reviews of books, films etc. I've only listened to part I of their Casino Royale (novel) review, which is in multiple parts because they go through chapter by chapter which some people might not like, but I listen to podcasts whilst working so I can afford the time for that. Also, they go into Fleming's life and general Bond stuff whilst reviewing the book which is also a factor and I've picked up or remembered various trivia as a result. It's good, worth a listen

Oh wow, I've never heard of a podcast going into that much detail about the Bond novels. It sounds fascinating to listen to. I've been looking for some new podcasts to listen to since I've been working from home. Thanks for the recommendation!

I just reread VARGR (for nth time) and it strikes me every time that the opening scene is not only the sequence that I judge the rest of Dynamite's JB by, but I also think it is one of the few best pan-media James Bond opening sequences.
