Don't think you can mention best of all time without bringing up Frankenstein (1931) or Night of the Living Dead (1968). But my personal favorite is The Thing (1982).

    Halloween (1978)

The Exorcist- I think you should care if somebody dies in a horror movie
The Shining- great performances all around
Needful Things and Salem's lot- for their plot
    Jeepers Creepers- roadtrip, yay!
    Crimson Peak

based on this... would I like KRAMPUS?

I would have to go for Halloween. They got crappy because as usual, people can't leave a good film alone, but it is what I think of when somebody says 'horror film'.

Does somebody die in THE EXORCIST? Never seen it. It was a big deal when it came out, but I was too young to see it. All I ever knew about it was that Linda Blair gets possessed, she spins her head around and some priest comes to cast the demon out of her. Sounded like it had a happy ending to me.

Not everybody makes it to the sequel... I just don't like mindless slaughter in most horror flicks (except if its played for black comedy) if you hate the cast to begin with.

On a side note: Did the Exorcist invent Shaky Cam?

Scariest horror movies, for my money (off the top of my head):

    Angel Heart
    Prince of Darkness
    Allucarda
    Marebito
    Lost Highway
    The Screw-Fly Solution

But, to be fair, I'll jump at just about anything. So, I'm looking more at things that haunted me after. Not so much "best," as "best at $&*^ing me up."

JAWS will always be Top Dog to me.

For a while I thought Exorcist but I saw it on the big screen a couple of years ago when they re-releaded it with the new footage but it did age too well. I think it's cause we're far less religious and superstitious nowadays. People have a different fear than the Devil.
