Some 80's Sunset Strip-based Glam or Hair Metal. My favourite band of that ilk, Ratt. Ratt were often accused of suffering from a lack of musical development and effectively releasing the same album over and over again. That was more down to their record label though. Atlantic hated not just the band Ratt themselves but the whole Metal scene and only signed Ratt through a desire to cash in on the Heavy Metal boom of the 80's. The producer of Ratt's first four albums was a yes-man for the label that insisted on getting Ratt's albums recorded as quickly and cheaply as possible. Hence the lack of musical progression.

Atlantic Records had no qualms about spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on Ratt's videos. It was the only way to get the band on MTV after all, which was essential back in the day. Signing massive cheques on the actual music though? Nope.

For folks who might be fans of James Gang after Joe Walsh was out of the band, the latest Rob Zombie film has at least two songs from the Tommy Bolin-era James Gang album Bang in it.

There's also an Iron Butterfly tune, but it's the first only anyone would come up with if you said "Iron Butterfly".

Also Less Than Zero was a mediocre movie, but the soundtrack had a few really great songs on it of which this was one. The novel was very different...it was ok.

Forgot to make note that September 5th would have been 73 this month.

One of the singers Freddie admired was Aretha Franklin. Two of her songs were played at his funeral, "Precious Lord Take My Hand" and "You've Got A Friend"

Very sad to hear of the passing of both Eddie Money and Ric Ocasek. RIP.

Van Halen or Van Hagar? I like both periods but, by Christ, those first six Roth era albums are absolutely essential.

I'd also like to extend my best wishes to the legendary Biff Byford. The lead singer with the NWOBHM greats Saxon needs immediate heart surgery and the band have been put on hold for a while. Get well soon Biff.
