It's 20 years in the future, Scott, Ororo, Prof. X, Kurt, Cable and Logan have retired from super-hero business. Now its time for a new leader to step forth and become the leader of the X-Men/Mutants....who is it?
If you would have asked me a decade ago, I would have said Sam easily but now I'm not sure any more....

Cannonball, Sam Guthrie. It was the leader of the the first young team of X-men and also it was the leader in Age of X, which was awesome.

Sam Guthrie has been pretty consistently portrayed as older then the likes of Iceman for years now, if all those people are retired then so is he. I vote Jubilee or Surge.

I'd say both Dani AND Sam. They'd balance each other, and have years of trust and loyalty between them.
Alternatively, as much as I despise her, Kitty is the other obvious choice.
