I don't like the fact that Cyclops already died from the first issue because it makes me feel like Cyclops didn't do anything at all. Lemire should have make him alive until the last issue. That would have been a more meaningful death, not just an idea, but real.

Joe Glass over at Bleeding Cool thinks Scott may be only mostly dead, and that Emma may be trying to copy one of Jean Grey's feats in preserving him.

If there is a silver lining at all to this, I think you nailed it. My biggest concern about Death of X would be that it would do permanent damage to his legacy and his character. Like Hank Pym beating his wife, it would be one of those moments that he'd never live down. That didn't happen though. Cyclops didn't do anything egregious. He quite literally was in no position to do anything that bad. Sure, his death was somewhat inglorious, but he didn't die tarnishing his legacy and all he had done to rebuild it after AvX. I think, in the grand scheme of things, that's a positive. I don't like it when characters get this massive blot on their reputation that they can never shake. Cyclops, of all characters, doesn't deserve something like that. I still have a feeling that Marvel will keep him dead for a good long while so that O5 Cyclops can fill the role. When he does eventually return, he won't have so much baggage to deal with.

There haven't been a lot of positives for Cyclops and the X-books lately. You have to take them where you can get them and in this case, I think this was the best we could've hoped for, given the circumstances.

It's 30 years too late for Scott's character to escape undamaged. Walking out on Madelyne and Nathan destroyed his moral credibility and standing as a hero. Cheating on Jean with Emma destroyed it again. Killing Xavier blew it to smithereens. As "interesting" as these developments/deconstructions may have made him to a certain segment of the readership, they made him into a despicable, pathetic character--a deadbeat dad, an adulterer, an oathbreaker. He makes vows and breaks them--not because he has to, but because he's just too weak to follow through. His word is crap.

Truly restoring Cyclops would require dialing him back to the kind of character he was circa 1982. With any luck, Marvel will wise up, use their turnkey reboot option--sending the teen O5 back to their proper time--and do just that.

Hi Claremont! Still salty marvel pays you to not write comics? Or that Cyclops was supreme leader of the X men for 10 years after you went to such lengths to write him out? OR that your pet character storm isn't blowing cosmic winds?
