Aw man. Making me tear up. I saw him live in concert about 2 years later, a few weeks before a lighting rig crushed his spinal cord at a concert and left him paralyzed from the neck down. Unforgettable show, a man full of love.

Even after the accident he still produced music, which is when I got hip to him via Dr. Dre. Crazy prolific when you include The Impressions from the early 60s. Streaming short-changes the artists but I'm glad to have Spotify for guys like Mayfield. I can fall all the way into the sounds that was before my time, he was special.

Fishbone...RnB, Ska, New Wave...they were way ahead of their time and should have been bigger

Having said that, mid-90's somebody in the band joined a crazy religious cult and of course that derailed the band...

LL Cool J on MTV Unplugged.

This is from 1990-ish...Listen close, in the break they do the opening riff to Otis Redding's "Hard to Handle" and undoubtedly it's cuz the Black Crowes had a hit then with a cover of that song.

Even in the 90s, he produced some incredible ballads.
