"Spanish Harlem" was written by Jerry Leiber and Phil Spector and was recorded by Ben E. King in 1960, as his first solo hit after leaving The Drifters, the seminal R&B group that he had fronted for several years.

In 1971 Aretha Franklin released her cover of the song, which went gold and outsold King's original version. She changed the lyrics from "A red rose up in Spanish Harlem" to "A rose in Black 'n Spanish Harlem." incidentally, the piano player is Dr. John (the Night Tripper).

    The queen, forever.

I was looking the Franklin version of this song and discovered Thelma's! This is pure awesomeness and uh, might even better than Aretha's 80's version.

I think people forget how popular some of these televanglists like Tim and Fanny and Ernest Angley were in the 80's until many of them basically self-destructed

I never understood while it took the Blues Brothers movie to give Aretha her comeback. The first few Arista albums had so much energy and love after the final 3 lackluster Atlantic albums, whether Luther was involved or not.

Produced by Arif Mardin, with the original Sweet Inspirations on backing vocals.

    Aretha: The Diet Years.

My favorite track from "You", her final effort with producer Jerry Wexsler, who had really propelled her to world stardom. It was a rather big flop.

Maybe it had to do with the odd sci fi outfit.
