Speaking of UTFO, this is of course is the song put them over the top a few years earlier
Ha! Remember when it was normal to see hip-hop crews in leather pants?
Then there was that whole "Real' Roxanne vs Roxanne Shante thing...that's whole 'nother can of worms
The broadcaster in Köln, which is close to where I live, still has both a jazz big band and a symphonic orchestra, and they got together with Ledisi, Bilal and some great studio musicians to stage a tribute to Curtis Mayfield. And I missed it. Gah.
But it's on youtube in its entirety.

I'm doing this thing where, as I'm reading Uncanny X-Men from the Silver Age on, an issue a day, I'm also listening to some albums from the cover date month, and I got up to March 1968 by now, and I gotta say... 1967 was a killer year for commercial soul music albums.
Great releases like 'Soul on the Rocks' by the Isley Brothers, 'The Supremes Sing Holland-Dozier-Holland', 'I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You' by Aretha Franklin, 'King & Queen' by Otis Redding and Carla Thomas, 'Reach Out' by the Four Tops, 'I Was Made to Love Her' by Stevie Wonder.
I was pleasantly surprised by the album 'Soul Men' by Sam & Dave. I only knew them from their single 'Soul Man'. It's a really solid album. They were great live as well:
Take my dreams, childish and weak at the seams
Please don't analyze, please just be there for me
Return of the Mack - Mark Morrison
Been blasting this all week. Makes me wanna go to a cookout.
This morning, I listened to the Jackson 5's debut album, and was pleasantly surprised by it. The one single off it, 'I Want You Back'/'Who's Lovin' You?' is a classic of course, but I was expecting there to be some skippable fluff tracks on it. But it's actually really solid.
Here's one of the two tracks on the album where Jermaine sings lead instead of Michael, a great Stevie Wonder cover:
Take my dreams, childish and weak at the seams
Please don't analyze, please just be there for me
On heavy repeat today. In my Stevie top 5 easily.
Well let me tell you girl.
Think of how EXCITING it would be,
If you should discover you feel like me.
Beefing up the old home security, huh?You bet yer ass.
