Already started. The Shuri book is the biggest indicator of that.

Plus the Rise of the BP shuri was very similar to the cartoon version, which is a mash up of the comic and movie versions.
Rise and the cartoon version (and even the MCU version) make sense because neither version has yet to become a Black Panther (the position is bound to affect someone one way or the other, and Shuri’s personality shift happened then). MCU Shuri is still a teenager so her demeanor is very understandable.

Comic Shuri behaving that way doesn’t make any sense whatsoever, considering what she went through. She’s been an adult for some time now, so why is she behaving like a teenager? Also, why would she need protection in her own country, and especially in a non-hostile area like a market? She’s a former BP with mystical powers. She can (or should be able to) handle herself in such a landscape.

This book is basically MCU Shuri with Griot powers.

My big fear is that all these changes have been done and the book tanks, meaning it was all for naught. Very likely this will occur, being that historically the MCU rarely (if ever) affects book sales.

The art looks promising. The Shuri presented here is a long way from the snapping necks character that we have known...the mandate from the editors might to be to tone down the new Disney princess much like the mandate was to get rid of the murderous Nakia. Nnedi is an excellent novelist and this might be a fun run on this character.

I almost hate to say it... but if she is falling into the Disney Princess category, toning her down a BIT probably is a good idea.

Still don't want her acting like a teenager like she is in the movies... but she probably doesn't need to be snapping people's necks either. I'm sure they can find a nice middle ground there.

No problem with making Shuri more jovial, but having her behave in a way that outright contradicts major events of her life (becoming a BP, dying in battle, the whole Djalia thing, coming back to life, etc)? If this was a reboot then sure, but it’s not. One wouldn’t even think that this Shuri was either a former BP or went to through the whole Djalia journey.

What’s happening is akin to MCU T’Challa replacing Comics T’Challa because the movie version is better known. They have similarities but are ultimately two different people who work well in their respective storylines. The same goes to Shuri, imho.

Yeah, Shuri acting like ''OMFG mom, you're ruining my life'' doesn't fit her personality at all. I was really open-minded to this because I do think it's possible to mix some elements of MCU Shuri to comics Shuri, but personality is one thing that should not change so glaringly all of a sudden. I'll reserve a better judgment for the entire first issue, but this was probably not the best way to start.

I would imagine having escorts and body guards is more a matter of protocal and formality than anything else. T'Challa had Doras for body guards when he's just walking around (even though he seldom actually brings them into battle). When you're royalty it's probably the norm to have an entourage walking around with you.

Though that probably became tough once Shuri started flying around as a flock of crows.

It’s been teased since season 2 of the Coates run. It’s finally happening.

Plus it's her mother. The most powerful being in the universe would still be told to wear a jacket by his mother. Lol.
