A few years later after the artists were there, the yuppies came and Wicker Park changed. Liz's album was called "Exile in Guyville" and it was partially inspired by her experiences in the neighborhood then.

Just for fun compare the opening to this version of the song with Guns N Roses "Used to Love Her" and then that with Rolling Stones "Dead Flowers"

I had their American Thighs album. I did not know this. So was Dave a player or something? Or were they at different times? I remember Courtney calling him a jock a lot.

No Radiohead has been posted yet! For shame!

    Radiohead - High and Dry

The Bends was my favorite RH album and this is before they really blew up too so I can see it not being many peoples.

Ah... so that may be where some of that came from.

    Madder Rose - Panic On

I like them. They sound like the Sundays but they may be too light for some people.

    Missing Persons - Words

I'm glad she left porn to start a musical career. She's really rocking.

Speaking of the mid-late 80's...The Replacements were an underground band from Minneapolis that for a while seemed like they could break big at almost any moment. While they had a reputation for loose rowdy live shows, lead singer Paul Westerberg was getting attention for being able to write actually poignant songs. It's this tension between chaos and heartbreak that gained them positive critical press. Ultimately, the band realized that if they wanted a continuing career as a band, they'd have to let go of lead guitarist Bob Stinson whose alcohol and drug problems had gotten out of control. They brought in Slim Dunlap which is around the time I saw them live.

Anyway, this performance is with Bob when their first major release "Tim" came out. They swapped clothes with each other between songs and supposedly got banned from SNL for I guess destroying their dressing room.

Paul had an ok run for a few years after the band broke up as a solo singer-songwriter.

Oh, and I forget to mention that bassist Tommy ended up in the Axel and Friends version of Guns N Roses for a few years.

Also from Minneapolis and active at the same time was Husker Du although they started out as a bit more hardcore. They similarly found critical acclaim, signed to major, then broke up before achieving massive commercial success. Singer Bob Mould ended up having a decent career as leader of the band Sugar and as a solo act.

Also from Minneapolis and also active at the same as the above bands were Soul Asylum. They of course had a huge hit with the album "Grave Dancers Union". This is from an earlier album that I actually bought in '89 called "Hang Time" thinking it would sound like the Replacements, which of course it didn't.

    R. E. M. - The One I Love

I always liked it when Kate Pierson would do something with them.
