Batman is singlehandedly keeping DC alive comicswise, the Nolan Trilogy are some of the most iconic superhero films ever, he has another big blockbuster movie on the way, is the main star of the widely successful Arkham and Injustice franchises, Keaton will be cameoing in other peoples movies going forward, there’s a new cartoon which Timm is heading on the way, and his wider Mythos is more popular than the rest of DC.

Wonder Woman had a successful 21st century movie (putting the mixed reception of the sequel aside), a video game coming from Monolith which is likely to be good and only increase the popularity of her wider mythos, and she has another WW movie coming aside from Gal likely going to take over leadership of the JL and cameo in other peoples movies. Assuming no major missteps I think WW will be taking Superman’s spot as the #2 character at DC.

Meanwhile Superman has S&L (which is great but is just a CW show), a cartoon (which looks great and is something I’m most excited about), his comics are currently excellent, and I am hopeful about the rumored CoIE animated trilogy that’s supposedly coming in 2023. However WB clearly does not have any faith in him, they would rather take a gamble on racebending him to be black than give Cavill another shot at a solo even though they are giving Gadot and Margot multiple chances. That tells me they don’t think that Superman has any appeal unless they do some stunt casting.

If his sales are bad than Clark is fucked because his sales are worse despite his book being fantastic. Only people I’ve seen say Jon is a flop is the CG crowd. Really at this point it’s mostly a matter of “who will be Clark’s successor?” rather than “will it happen?”. Major productions are being made with people other than Clark Kent as we know him meant to star as Superman. I don’t think Clark will ever fade away, but I do think he will have to share his mantle with others, and I’m mixed about that. There’s some I love, but others I detest and I am disappointed that we won’t get that one big success with Clark the way the Marvel characters, Batman, WW, or Aquaman have gotten.
DC didn't replace Wonder Woman when she was considered the weak link of the Trinity - and many people still see her that way, even now. They're not going to permanently replace a character with a far greater track record than Wonder Woman. Diana had a spinoff that got recently cancelled and it's a coin toss what her third film will be like, to say nothing of if Gadot will want to keep playing the role afterwards.

We have a long way to go before Diana takes Superman's role as DC's #2. Them resorting to stunts like making Clark black would just be WB/DC trying something else to appeal to people like they've been doing for the past decades with him or Diana. At best, I'd say Clark and Diana are simply sharing the #2 spot as opposed to one replacing the other.

Superman as an IP is in a transitional phase right now. As fans, we're worried about the outcome but the end result is that Superman has to change, not only because of the time but also the hands holding him.

New fans love to see mantle changes because they think it's progression, not realizing it's going to be walked back like it's been every time before them. They're here looking for manga progression in a market that does not move the way manga does. They're entirely different beasts. One is meant to tell a story and end, the other is meant to tell serialized stories about specific characters. For that reason, I don't see Jon ever being permanent and I don't think the powers that be truly think he's Superman forever. This is a pump and dump. They're going to run as far as they can with Jon and then bring Clark back in full force when Jon has run his course, essentially building anticipation back while addressing an underserved market by their estimation. I fully expect to see lots of buzz words around when Clark gets to be Superman proper again, lots of "the original is still the best" or something.
TBH... I kinda see this as a bad thing though. Continuity resets SUCK.

Spider-Man didn't suddenly stop being popular because of the MCU. Neither did the X-Men even with the crappy reception to their recent movies aside from Logan and the Deadpool films.

Even if WB cares about representation, they are not going to get rid of Superman.

Because spiderman kept regular movies that made money and made their presence felt.Xmen has suffered as an ip because of their inconsistent strike rate.but, they have a strike rate.Supes?he has neither.last time i checked supes is white.he is a savior. so much so that he is basically superhero jesus.Yeah! I see them at the very least turn clark ethnicity or get rid of his shtick to something that's consumable.Anyways,i got skin in the game.I am fine either way.

My controversial take, superman that leaps is better than superman that flies.

As said,if i where making a superman movie it would just be the oil rig sequence in man of steel. Not the rest of the stuff.Clark leaping around and fighting for worker safety in a rig that going to go boom.Yeah! That's a movie. Not to mention the guy would get his ass kicked and fail.No boring lectures..No grandstanding poses.Just a dude fighting for the common folks.

Then you should like the outside of comics versions of conner kent then. He doesn't fly, and he is more badass.

I'm more into Sharif or Kenan replacing Clark over Jon. They are bolder choices and less connected to Clark.

I'd check out a miniseries focused on Jon's time away from his parents. People say Teen Jon is a minime of his father and exploring that era of his life is an easy way to sell him as different than his father.

I don't mind the Super Family being in Legion but it's not a necessity. I'm cool with having an era appropriate character being the protagonist.

I'm more into Clark as an old soul than a young gun. Make him the Morrison old hopeful vet from the "Authority" miniseries.

    So does Superman.

Same applies to Spider-Man. There's even a clause that he can't be portrayed as anything but white, male and heterosexual.

There are dozens of ways you can write Mister Mxyzptlk's de aging Jon. You can make it as complex or as simple as you want.

Mister Mxyzptlk can even erase memories. One More Day did something nearly as huge and nobody in the universe even knows what happened.

But if a writer wanted them to remember he just has to make it so Jon + Clark + Lois all need this and agree to this. Either because Jon is dying, or because there's a crisis in the timeline, or because they miss the time they lost with each other, etc.

And we don't need the trauma of the Kents raising a fake son

Sure.Spider-man ain't blunt with it like superman(no superhero is as blunt with it like clark). He's a selfish yet good at heart kid who takes no moral high ground most of the time, unlike clark.Superman has two reboots without having any sequals. His presence is people feeling "meh!" at best.Spidey had actual sequals.

I'd probably make him the Tinkerer of the Superman family. He learns how to invent his own tech. If you want him to have TTK, him inventing a way to replicate M'gann's TK would be cool.

As far as Jon being possibly de aged or not . One thing that I would like to see is Jor-El showing up again .
Since DC opened up that Jor-El managed to escape Krypton too , then why not use him occasionally showing up on Earth to create problems for his son and grandson .
Or he doesn't have to create problems. He could show up needing Clark and Jon to go on a trip to "fix" something.
He could be the mad scientist with good intentions that Clark has to deal with .
