Default Indigenous Characters In The DCU

Figured we'd have a thread about indigenous characters in the DCU seeing as how there doesn't appear to be one. DC doesn't have much in the way of good Native American characters from what I've seen but I figured one featuring the ones we like would still be good.

I'm going for Man-of-Bats and Raven, just because well, DC has terrible, terrible Indians.

Does anyone know why Grayson wasn't "allowed" to confirm Arsenal's mother was Dine, back when they were doubling down on his Navajo raising and tribal affiliation?

Seriously? That sounds like an early sign that Devin Grayson was more interested in legitimizing her fanfiction than writing good comics.

Then again, it may just be simply that fair-skinned, red-haired Roy Harper may not be that believable as a half-Native child? I could be talking out of my ass here, though.

His father, the only parent we've ever seen, is a light-skinned redhead.

Children inherit genes from both parents and can look more like either (or like neither, for that matter).

Nor, would that specify that his mother was full-blood (which, due to how enrollment works, might not even mean she was "full blood," if we want to get straight up Nazi blood quanta about it) or not, how light or dark she was. Especially since, afaik, we've never seen her.

For the record, though, she didn't invent Roy being raised by Dine, I'm not even sure she's the one who first wrote him as enrolled. That's been Roy's childhood since there's been a Roy Harper.

WHat exactly were Miiyahbin's powers supposed to be? Was she some kind of elemental?

My wife is half Native and you'd never know it looking at her. Our kids are quarter Native and dont look it either.

I liked the fact that Grayson dipped into a part of Roy's past no one had really done anything with. It was all there from the start, just ignored. Nice to see her flesh it out. Actually, Roy was about the only character I think she wrote really well.....

    Miiyahbin Marten.

I have no idea who she is, but from the listed ones she's the only one that doesn't look like a charicature.

We don't have to go Nazi blood quanta - the Navajo have their own. Albeit, I think that's for new enrollment. Though those are set by the US government, right? But the Navajo still use theirs for enrollment, and I don't think all tribes do? Theirs is 1/4, whereas I know a tribe near me was 1/8.

I tend to agree, to a degree. More minority characters is good - retroactively adding it to previous characters is not. And that's before we even get into the issue of that reducing the adoptionism aspect, which matters to me. At least it had a basis, though, unlike some of the other heroes who got retconned. Moreover, given her handling of Dick Grayson's, I tend to think it would not have been handled well.

I liked the fact that Grayson dipped into a part of Roy's past no one had really done anything with. It was all there from the start, just ignored.
His mother always has been a complete non-entity. Not sure when he got the Navajo background (I know Brave Bow was Sioux at one point in time, and, of course, he was much older when his father died in the first version, and Quoag wasn't a parent there). Post-Crisis reset, maybe? Anyway, I like it. But his mom has always been so ignored - not even given a name, so far I can tell. For my headcanon reboot, I'm seriously considering making Brave Bow and Roy Sr. a gay couple that used a surrogate. I know it's fanficcy, but hey, I'm not professional, so I can do fanficcy.

So, no Koryak on the list? Because only half.

Guess Pow Wow Smith (real name Ohiyesa) doesn't show up because he's a western character instead of superhero one? He had a a weird beginning - at first being a contemporary character, then being set in the past.

EDIT: Didn't realize how old the posts I was quoting were - sorry.

That last bit was my first thought when I saw the question. It would just make fans snort when they ran across the ludicrous suggestion that "Roy has been half-Native American by blood all along, and we just never mentioned it before, and he's never been drawn and colored in a way that would even remotely hint at it, but we know you won't complain!" The only way it would make sense would be if they had waited for the next "Cosmic Reset Event," such as Flashpoint leading to the New 52, and then rebooted him as having a rather darker complexion than he's ever had before, saying: "That's the way it is in the new-and-improved timeline!"

John Ravenhair/ Black Bison is probably my favorite. I enjoyed Equinox too, though.
