I really don't even understand that. We finally got a Robin who didn't come from some tragic backstory, and they decided "no no no, that just wont do, bring on the grief!"

course this is the same story where Dr.Light rapes The Elongated Man's wife, so its just filled with tacky angst-ridden ill-fated "mature" attempts at superhero storytelling

Because in Dan Didio's mind, all heroes have to be brooding and angsty and cannot have any semblance of a stable personal life whatsoever. They have to sacrifice any sort of personal happiness for the "mission." Those are his words btw, not mine.

Killing Jack Drake in Identity Crisis pretty much broke Tim as a character, or at least as the character he had been, and he's never really recovered.

Yes, I agree that Identity Crisis, combined with Infinite Crisis and War Games, began a long-term slide for Tim Drake from which he has never recovered. Even the golden opportunity of the reboot, which could have been used to correct the situation, only made things worse.
