Default How Many Golden Age Superheroes are There?

I remember seeing something that claimed about six hundred from the years 1938-1955.

    Anyone else heard anything?

Yea as soon as characters like Superman, Batman & Captain America made it big there was a huge boom of other companies trying to copy that success with their own characters. Of course as we know for better or worse many of these didn't last very long and faded into obscurity. Other then the well known heroes there was also there were also ones like Amazing-Man, The Green Turtle, The Red Bee, etc.

Here's a list from Wikipedia, though I am not sure how complete it is.

Thanks for the responses. I finally found a resource-- Mike Benton's SUPERHEROES OF THE GOLDEN AGE, which estimated "over 700."
