Aw, crap. 2016 wishes it had as many interesting movies.
Some of those I've never heard of. Great thread. Now I plan to watch Annie Hall, Suspiria (ah, that's where Black Swan came from), The Gauntlet, Rabid, Shock Waves (for the Hellboy fan in me) and Audrey Rose.

Close Encounter of the Third Kind is the only film of that year (from memory) that I truly love. It's inventive, beautifully told and wonderfully acted; a true gem of the genre. From 1977 I also greatly enjoy the Goodbye Girl; and (because of childhood memories) both the Rescuers and Star Wars hold a place in my heart (even if they are flawed).

P.S. the Spy Who Loved Me and Wizards would be my guilty pleasures

Awesome idea for a thread. Films from that year (which I have NOT) seen but want to would include A Bridge Too Far, Equus, the Hills Have Eyes (original), Julia, New York New York, Saturday Night Fever and the Turning Point

And do you think Empire is better than Star Wars?

That year I saw a double-feature of Star Wars and Close Encounters at my local theater.

Star Wars kind of eclipsed everything else for me in the year. Nothing came close.

God, yes! The Empire Strikes Back is (in my eyes) brilliant.

I don't know why that is relevant??? Most people who have seen the Wizard of Oz weren't born in the 30s That's the difference between theatre and film; one is a unique moment in time, the other can be seen across the generations.

Now, for the "Left Of The Dial" stuff...

    - The Shaw Brothers' film Executioners From Shaolin was released that year.
    - The John Waters' film Desperate Living was released that year.
    - The lesser known Romero film Martin was released that year.
    - The lesser known Peckinpah film Cross Of Iron comes out that year. One year before Convoy...

Edit: Maybe Martin is '78 or '79?

Now that I'm thinking about it, Rabid is probably '77 or '78.

Good call. Very interesting flick, very unlike most horror films.
