Navy blue above the binary star and red underneath the binary star.

Wow! Hadn't noticed that. May mean nothing, but I hope it does. Mar-Vell's color scheme is much more appealing than Carol's as Captain Marvel.

I love Coipel, but that was a terrible redesign of Carol. In fact, most of the ones he did during that era of Avengers with Geoff Johns were awful.

The design is meant for an awful evil version of the comicbook character Carol Danvers.

    Captain Marvel #2 Jun 1968
"From the Void of Space Comes the Super Skrull!"
Skrull emperor Dorrek VII has become aware of recent activity on Earth involving the Skrull's age old enemies the Kree,
most notably the recent activation of the Kree Sentry. Seeking to find out the truth of the Kree's involvement on Earth,
Dorrek calls the Super-Skrull back to the Skrull home world from his exile after his last defeat at the hands of the Fantastic Four.
The Super-Skrull is ordered to find out what their enemies are up to and kill Mar-Vell. The reward for success would be anything the Super-Skrull desired.
Wanting to be married to the emperor's daughter Anelle, the Super-Skrull accepts the mission and returns to Earth.

There, Mar-Vell has just returned from his battle against the Sentry to find that his carrying bag has been stolen from his room.
Suspecting the owner of the hotel, and fearing that tampering may have activated the self-destruct mechanism on it, Mar-Vell rushes out to find the hotel owner.
The owner himself is on his way to the Cape with the carrying bag, to turn it over to the military there.

When Mar-Vell tracks him down, he finds that the hotel owner is being attacked by the Super-Skrull.
Captain Marvel then battles the Super-Skrull, however the Skrull's many powers prove to be too much for Mar-Vell who is easily knocked out and taken prisoner.
Aboard the Kree ship orbiting Earth, Yon-Rogg decides to do nothing, hoping the Super-Skrull eliminates his opposition for Una's affections.

The Super-Skrull then leaves the scene with Mar-Vell as his prisoner, leaving behind the carrying case, with it's self destruct function ticking away.

Script by Roy Thomas, pencils by Gene Colan, inks by Vince Colletta.

Cleanest illustration I could manage for Carol's 1980s black costume, from a Marvel Team-Up appearance with Spider-Man. Used as a lead for our 1980s Ms. Marvel character profile.

I'm still miffed Marvel Two-in-one vol. 1 #51 doesn't have a digital reissue yet, it was a good appearance of hers.
Writeups.org -- huge encyclopaedia of characters, chiefly from super-hero comic books. It's great.

    Ms. Marvel #18 Jun 1978
"The St. Valentine's Day Avengers Massacre!"
Continued from last issue... Attacked by Centurion, Ms. Marvel ends up in a battle across town.
The fight itself attracts the attention of the Avengers, who come to try and stop the battle themselves.

As the battle rages across the city, Mystique reports to her superiors about the progress of the attack,
while on the planet Hala, Phae-Dor and Bun-Dall are convinced that the Supreme Intelligence is still in stasis.
However, they will soon learn how wrong they are.

Back on Earth, the Avengers get into an argument over what to do about Centurion, unaware that the enemy is making one more attack on the group.

Ms. Marvel steps in and tosses Wonder Man at Centurion breaking up the argument and causing the rest of the Avengers to focus on the task at hand.

Fighting Centurion into a power plant, Ms. Marvel uses the dynamos to jolt Centurion's armor
with electricity and tosses away his now unstable hand blaster, which explodes in the sky.

Afterwards, the Avengers arrive and Centurion is unmasked as George Bullard, which prompts the Avengers to question their own security.

Chris Claremont script. Jim Mooney & Ricardo Villamonte art.

    Avengers #172 Jun 1978
The Korvac Saga: Part 5 of 10 - "Holocaust in New York Harbor!" Guest-starring Ms. Marvel
Hawkeye returns to Avengers Mansion to discover no one is home! Cautiously entering to look around, he leaves the door open.
Henry Gyrich chooses that moment to stop by the mansion, and discovering the door open he quickly becomes aggravated.

At the convent, the Avengers stand over the fallen body of Ultron. Jocasta and Captain America disappear, with no explanation.
Perplexed, they allow the nuns to escort them out, and return to Avenger Mansion. There they find Hawkeye and discover that he captured the 'intruder', Gyrich.
Freed by Vision, Gyrich angrily denounces their security, and strips them of their Avenger's privileges.

Shortly after Gyrich leaves, Crystal calls to tell them that Pietro has vanished! Then in comes Jarvis, back from his jog, to tell the Avengers that the harbor is under attack by Tyrak.
Iron Man divides the Avengers into task forces - sending Vision, Scarlet Witch, Wonder Man, Hawkeye, and Ms. Marvel to the harbor,
Janet and Henry to the phones to call in any and all former Avengers they can get a hold of and Thor and Beast to be a backup team. He heads to the lab to work on the disappearances.

Arriving at the harbor, the Avengers find Tyrak assaulting a ship.

Wanda and Hawkeye get deposited on a Coast Guard Cutter.

The heroes beat Tyrak when Vision uses his solar beams to dehydrate him, but without their Avengers priority to let them run a Quinjet to pick up their defeated foe,
they have nothing to do with him and wind up throwing him back into the ocean. Ms. Marvel leaves,

and as the Avengers start walking home, Vision suddenly disappears!

Back at Avengers Mansion, Henry and Janet have managed to contact Black Panther, Hercules, Whizzer, and Captain Mar-Vell.
However, Beast has taken a Quinjet, and Thor is out in Jamaica Bay fighting the Living Monolith.
Meanwhile in the shadows, we see a cameo of the villain who has kidnaped several Avengers already.

Cameo appearances by the Black Panther, Captain America, Crystal, Jocasta, Moondragon, Quicksilver, Two-Gun Kid, Ultron, and the Collector.
NOTES: Tyrak previously appeared in Avengers 156. This issue briefly crosses over with Marvel Team-Up 69 and 70.

    Avengers #232 Jun 1983
"And Now Starfox!" Part 2 of 2.
Captain Marvel has been made a full-fledged Avenger to replace Iron Man,

and now Eros, taking the codename Starfox, becomes a provisional member to replace Hawkeye, who has suffered a broken leg in battle.
The Wasp then sends the new recruit with Thor and Captain Marvel to aid the Navy in tracking the Plantman's submarine.

On arrival, they are attacked by giant animated kelp, then plunge underwater, taking the battle to their adversary.
As the three Avengers easily rip through his ship's defenses, the panicking Plantman activates an emergency device supplied by his silent partner, the Wizard.
Instantly, he is encapsulated in a metal sphere which shoots high into the stratosphere, and the Avengers must rescue their foe from being stranded in orbit before his oxygen is depleted.

Script by Roger Stern. Pencils by Al Milgrom. Inks by Joe Sinnott and crew.

    Avengers #5 Jun 1998
"Accusation most Foul!" Part 1 of 2. Guest-starring the Squadron Supreme.
The Avengers enjoy a bit of downtime before they're asked to help with the rescue of a downed passenger plane.

They arrive on the scene but are challenged by the Squadron Supreme who believe them to be impostors and that the real Avengers died during the Onslaught incident.

Both teams battle until Cap decides to withdraw, believing public sympathy will support them.
Unfortunately, in the wake of the Thunderbolts and Skrull infiltration, the public is wary of the Avengers.

The intervention by the Squadron was a distraction so Imus Champion's agents could steal weaponry from a crashed alien ship.
