    Avengers #188 Oct 1979
    "Elementary, Dear Avengers!"
The Avengers take Quicksilver home to Attilan.
Most of the team are dazzled by the sight of the futuristic city.
Crystal is on hand to greet her husband and the team upon their arrival.
She reveals the news that she is pregnant to a very stunned Pietro.
Although Wanda is happy for Crystal, she is suddenly plagued with doubts about her own
potential for motherhood -- could she and the Vision have a child? Should they even try?

The next day, the Avengers depart for home. Onboard the quinjet, the Beast begins reading the Darkhold,
much to the consternation of the Scarlet Witch who reacts with alarm.
She warns him that the Darkhold is full of passages that are magical traps to ensnare unwary readers.

Captain America alerts the team to a potential problem on their course home.
The most direct route to their home base takes them into Soviet airspace, something they probably should avoid.
But before they can change course, they are intercepted by MiG fighter pilots.
The Beast, who speaks Russian, tries to ask permission to fly through.

But suddenly, one of the MiGs bursts apart in midair and the other abruptly speeds away, back to base.
The Beast relates that he overheard chatter about a disaster taking place at a nearby nuclear power plant.

Cap wants to use the distraction to beat it out of there.
The Beast and Ms. Marvel however want to lend a hand at the disaster site.
The team debates whether or not to do anything, with Ms. Marvel arguing the hardest that they should help.
Wonder Man takes Cap’s side, wary of the Russians, regardless of the dangers they face.
Cap insists on contacting Agent Gyrich before they act, even though everybody is sure what his response will be.
But Ms. Marvel has secretly removed a vital component of the comm system, preventing this.
Reluctantly, Cap steers the quinjet toward the power plant.
The Falcon quietly stews that nobody bothered to ask his opinion, taking it for a sign that nobody cares about him.

The Avengers arrive at the power plant, which is besieged by the Soviet army.
They don’t quite get the greeting they’d hoped for as the military level guns at them.
But one older Colonel orders the troops to hold their fire.
The Beast interprets that this Colonel remembers that Cap fought alongside
Russian forces against the Germans in WWII, something Cap confirms did occur.
The Colonel directs the Avengers to the reactor control center, where malevolent beings have taken control.
They first encounter Vanadium, a being composed of the very super-strong alloy.
Despite initially repelling the Avengers, Vanadium is shattered by Wonder Man.

In the plant’s control room he Avengers encounter the Elementals, a bizarre group of humanoid beings,
each one of them displaying properties of a particular element from the periodic table.
The two groups battle each other, but one of the Elementals - Chlorine - fills the chamber with poison gas, driving the Avengers away.
As they retreat, though, the Falcon realizes the Wasp is not among them
and flies back alone to rescue her hoping to prove himself to his teammates.
Unfortunately, he is knocked out cold by Vanadium, who has reassembled himself.

Outside, the remaining Avengers are once again confronted by the Russian Army.
The Colonel who granted them permission to access the plant is nowhere to be seen
and a small platoon of technicians is crawling all over the quinjet.
Infuriated, the Scarlet Witch scatters the troops with a hex bolt.
Another hex bolt drives the technicians away from the quinjet and they all keep their distance thereafter.

The Wasp joins them, explaining that she passed out due to the gas.
When she awoke, she saw that the Elementals were subjecting imprisoned plant workers
to a procedure that transforms them into more Elementals. She also confirms that they have the Falcon.
    The team plan their second assault on the control room;
Ms. Marvel removes the laser cannon from a nearby tank to use as a weapon.

Once more down below, the Elementals are about to subject the Falcon to
the transformation when his teammates return to rescue him, much to his relief.

As soon as he’s clear, Ms. Marvel and the Beast fire the laser cannon into the reactors,
causing radioactive material to flood the room.
It engulfs the Elementals but the Avengers manage to escape unscathed.

Boarding the quinjet once more, they take off and head home with no more delays.
A narration caption states that Soviet Union’s news outlets report the closure of a Siberian power plant, with no details given.

Cameo appearance by Crystal, Black Bolt, Gorgon, Karnak and the Darkhold.
Avengers Lineup: Beast, Captain America, Falcon, Ms. Marvel, Scarlet Witch, Wonder Man and the Wasp.
NOTES: In this issue Crystal reveals that she is pregnant. Quicksilver and Crystal's baby, Luna, is born in Fantastic Four 240.
The Elements of Doom return many years later in Thunderbolts 6.

Plot by Jim Shooter. Script by Bill Mantlo. Art by John Byrne (breakdowns), Dan Green (finishes) and Frank Springer (finishes).

Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #6 Oct 1984
    "A Little Death..."
After trying to escape the X-Men, the Wasp finds herself trying to get her escape ship under control.
Unable to figure out the strange controls, the Wasp ends up crashing the ship.

Unsure of where to go, she finds a holographic projector that shows her a nearby dome
and she decides to shrink down to wasp size to try and locate it.
On her way out, she turns and uses one of her bio-stings to destroy the ship.

Flying into a nearby swamp she fights off some aggressive insects and finds the dome that the ship showed her earlier.
Returning to human size the Wasp figures out what to do next when she is suddenly attacked by the Lizard.

Meanwhile, aboard the Worldship of Galactus, Doctor Doom uses a device
there to draw a strange energy he detected within the walls of the ship.
To his surprise this energy reforms into Klaw, the so-called master of sound.
Much to Doom's dismay, Klaw's mind has been affected by the ordeal,
but Doom learns that Klaw got trapped during a battle with Dazzler.
The mutant used her powers to convert his sound form into light energy that she then absorbed into her body.
Later when she was abducted by Galactus, she used that energy to try and attack him,
but the energy did nothing and Klaw's form became trapped in the wall.
Finding Klaw of no use to him, Doom then continues to find something that will help him stop Galactus and then the Beyonder.
Finding a control monitor, Doom views the events on Battleworld.
He sees the gathered heroes regrouping after their battle with his minions who have now fled back to Doombase
while Galactus himself continues to prepare the device that will help him consume Battleworld.
Doom quickly formulates a plan to spoil Galactus' plan
and uses a teleporter to send Klaw down to the planet to deliver a message to his minions.

When Klaw materializes in Doombase, he recites a code word that convinces Ultron that he was
sent by their mutual master, prompting the gathered villains to listen to what Klaw has to say.
Back in the swamp, the Wasp realizes that the Lizard has attacked her out of fear due to the fact that he has been injured.
Convincing the Lizard that she means no harm, the Wasp manages to get close enough to him to treat his wound.
While back at Magneto's base, the X-Men have returned to salvage what they can after it was blasted by Galactus.
Feeling weak, Xavier decides to take a moment to rest.
He then reaches out with his mind telepathically to see what the villains are up to.
Before the Enchantress detects his presence and uses her magic to block him out, Xavier learns how the villains are
planning to cause a volcanic eruption on the other side of the planet and summons his X-Men to venture out and stop them.
When he puts Cyclops in charge this angers Storm as she is the leader of the X-Men.
But when she confronts Charles with this, he warns her that if she refuses to follow his
orders he will not be against using his mental powers to force her to follow his bidding.
Storm concedes but still believes that he is leading the X-Men into defeat.

Meanwhile, at the heroes camp in the alien village, Colossus
continues to recover from the injuries he incurred in the last battle.
He finds himself torn between his feelings for his girlfriend Kitty Pryde back home
and these new feelings he has for Zsaji the alien healer who saved his life.
When she comes to heal him again he tries to open up his feelings for her, but the language barrier prevents her from doing so.
When she goes to depart, she is picked up by the Human Torch who does some areal tricks with her before kissing her
and taking her away, making Colossus grow even more jealous.

Elsewhere Captain America is planning strategies with Mister Fantastic, the Hulk, the Thing and She-Hulk.
When She-Hulk demands that they go looking for the Wasp, who is still missing,
Cap assures her that Captain Marvel is searching for them.
All this talk begins to get on the Hulk's nerves who demands that they go out and smash their enemies.
Not far away, Hawkeye is preparing some traditional arrows after the last of his trick arrows were used to boost Iron Man's armor.
Iron Man meanwhile tries to hit on Captain Marvel, who is uninterested
and confused -- unaware that the man inside the armor is not the Iron Man she has previously known.

For himself, James Rhodes wonders what has come over him and complains about his head hurting,
which has been happening a lot recently since he became Iron Man.

At that moment the X-Men attack the villains at the volcano in an attempt to foil their plans.
During the ensuing battle, Wolverine manages to get close enough to the Molecule Man to slash him across the chest
with his Adamantium claws, although Cyclops blasts Wolverine's arm to prevent him from striking a fatal blow.
The villains retreat with their injured comrade and Cyclops unleashes an optic blast in a volcanic cone
which causes the X-Men to flee themselves when the volcanoes begin to erupt.
While back at the swamp the Wasp finishes binding the Lizard's wounds when she is suddenly
shot through the chest with a laser beam fired by a massive vehicle piloted by the Wrecking Crew.
When the Lizard tries to attack them, they immobilize the creature with a stasis beam
and take the two prisoners even though they believe the Wasp is dead.
Back at the Heroes camp, things appear even grimmer when they see
that Galactus has almost completed his planet-devouring device.
As they contemplate what to do next they are unaware that a shadowy figure is observing their movements.

    Avengers #248 Oct 1984
"To Save the Eternals!" Guest-starring the Eternals.
Maelstrom has captured the Uni-Mind in a beam intended to drain its raw mental energy for his own use, ultimately killing the Eternals.
Having swiftly arrived by quinjet, the Vision attacks the villain, while the Scarlet Witch first frees, then disrupts the Uni-Mind.

His ability to absorb kinetic energy, thus using his opponents' strength against them,
enables Maelstrom to stand against the Eternals and Avengers' combined might,

but when the struggle begins to turn against him, he summons his ally, Deathurge,
whose ebony spear passes through him, leaving him dead and cold.
The immaterial Deathurge then easily escapes.

In the wake of the battle, most of the Eternals, acting on the Uni-Mind's decision,
soon depart for space, while a comparative handful elect to remain on Earth.

Flashback cameos by Black Bolt and the Thing
Avengers Lineup: Captain Marvel, Scarlet Witch, Starfox, Vision and the Wasp.
NOTE: Deathurge previously appeared in Marvel Two-in-One 72.

Script by Roger Stern. Art by Al Milgrom (breakdowns) and Joe Sinnott (finishes) and crew.

    Incredible Hulk #300 Oct 1984
    "Days of Rage!"
The now savage Hulk stands on the roof of Smythe's Warehouse and begins tearing down a billboard.
He hurls it down to the street below, and the panicking crowd cannot understand why the Hulk has suddenly become so feral.
Daredevil observes the carnage and detects an abandoned child sitting in the midst of the fleeing pedestrians.
He swings down and scoops the child to safety before the hordes of people accidentally trample him.

Gabe Jones leads an attack squadron of S.H.I.E.L.D. hoverfliers to engage the Hulk.
They launch napalm missiles at him, and the roof of the warehouse erupts into flames.
Kate Waynesboro stands nearby watching the attack.
She realizes now that the man she loved is hopelessly lost and that the Hulk is truly nothing more now than a monster.

The Hulk picks up a water tower from the roof of the building and hurls it at the S.H.I.E.L.D. hoverfliers.
The ships are destroyed, and several S.H.I.E.L.D. agents fall seemingly to their doom.
Fortunately, Spider-Man arrives and catches them in a net of webbing.
He then creates a web canopy to protect the agents from the deluge of now blistering hot water that descends down from the destroyed tower.
The combination of steaming water and flames causes the roof of the warehouse to collapse and the Hulk falls down inside.

From nearby Greenwich Village, Doctor Strange sits on the stoop of his mansion and observes events from afar.
He knows that there is no chance of saving Banner, but he needs to find a way to stop the Hulk without destroying him.
He goes into his sanctum to consult with the Orb of Agamotto.

The Hulk meanwhile, emerges from the burning warehouse and stalks out into the street
where he is met by a battalion of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and New York City police officers.
The S.H.I.E.L.D. agents fire upon the Hulk with their advanced handguns, but this proves fruitless.
The Hulk tears up a section of the street pavement, which sends agents and police officers alike scattering across the ground.

At City Hall, Mayor Ed Koch consults with New York governor Mario Cuomo regarding the Hulk's rampage.
The governor recommends calling in the National Guard, but the mayor instead sends a signal to Avengers Mansion.

Other heroes arrive on the scene to take their chance at bringing down the Hulk.
The Human Torch unleashes a blast of flame, but the Hulk extinguishes him with a super-clap of his hands.
Iron Fist charges up his fist and punches at the Hulk,
but the Hulk catches the blow and re-channels the energy back into Iron Fist's body.
Power Man charges at him from behind and the Hulk responds by punching him through four skyscrapers.

Eventually, the Avengers arrive and attack the Hulk as well.
Starfox attempts to use his pheremone power to calm him,
but the Hulk is beyond calming at this point and sends Starfox flying.
The Scarlet Witch uses her hex power to electrocute the Hulk, but this doesn't even slow him down.
The Vision tells Captain Marvel to assume the form of Gamma radiation and attack the Hulk. This too proves futile.

The Vision engages the Hulk directly and tries to stop him by altering his density.
The Hulk pounds the Vision across the top of his head, driving him several feet into the ground.

Thor takes his turn and the two combatants rage across Manhattan trading blow for blow with one another.
Thor is one of the few beings alive who can actually withstand a punch from the Incredible Hulk.
Their fight carries over into Central Park, and the Hulk attacks Thor with his own commemorative Adamantium statue.
Thor deflects the projectile with Mjolnir, and the impact sends shockwaves across the city.

Finally, Doctor Strange arrives. After consulting with the Orb of Agamotto,

he realizes that there is only one solution towards stopping the Hulk – exile.
Having analyzed several different dimensional realms, he decides that the only place
where the Hulk can no longer threaten a living being is in a Crossroads realm.
Strange opens a mystic portal and places it before the Hulk, just as the green behemoth begins charging at him.
As the Hulk enters the rift, the portal quickly closes.
