    Iron Man #7 Aug 1998
Live Kree or Die. Part 1 of 4. "Bad Moon Rising!" Guest-starring Warbird!
In the mysterious 'blue area' of the moon, 6 Kree fanatics declare their allegiance to a being
they believe will help them establish a new Kree empire on earth… The Supreme Intelligence!

Iron man flies to Boston to speak with Carol Danvers a.k.a. Warbird,

who wallows in self-pity because her powers are currently in an unpredicable state of 'flux'.

In an effort to connect with her on a personal level, Tony reveals that he is Iron Man.
Carol recounts her past history from her origin as Kree-human hybrid Ms. Marvel,
transitioning through her space travelling white hole energized stint as Binary,
and even explaining why she chose her current name of 'Warbird'.
She blames Captain America for her current woes. Tony notices she has been drinking.
When he tries to warn her about the dangers of alchohol abuse, she gets very defensive.
Later, on the road with Pepper, when Tony tries to encourage her to work on patching up her failed relationship with Happy,
she too rebuffs his efforts at playing 'counsellor', telling him to mind his own business.

Tony visits Powersource Inc., a small power company run by Victoria Snow, a former employee of Stark Enterprises.
During his recent encounter with Firebrand, a transmission indicated this as his point of origin.
Victoria acknowledges this to be true, bemoaning a tragic accident while obviously hiding something important.

Suddenly, a sauced Warbird comes crashing through a gigantic glass window sarcastically bad-mouthing and then directly assaulting Tony Stark.
No sooner than Tony talks sense into Carol do the Kree soldiers from the moon appear on the scene calling themselves 'Legionaires'.
The Legionaires surround Warbird, revealing that their interest is in her and not in Tony Stark.
They do, however, mention that they have a vendetta against the Avengers because they had
attempted to kill the 'Supreme Intelligence' back in Avengers #347.
Victoria scolds the Kree soldiers for revealing themselves, insisting she had everything under control.
Warbird crashes the floor beneath their feet, helping Tony escape so he can don his Iron Man armor.

Warbird and Iron Man hold their own admirably against the Kree warriors until suddenly... the towering and imposing figure of
SENTRY #571 declares that every enemy of the Kree (in other words, every human) in the building has been targeted for termination.
Evidently, now that the Kree have acquired the power source they needed for their campaign of earth domination,
they now plan to destroy every trace of engineering evidence, assuring that they and they alone will be the only
ones with access to this technology. If a hundred or so humans also must die to protect their secrets, then "so be it".

The SENTRY emits a Kree 'vibro field' which he announces will destroy the entire building and everyone in it. This field supposedly cannot be penetrated.
The only way to shut it down is to shut down the SENTRY itself. Once it becomes painfully apparent that everyone at PowerSource Inc. seems doomed to die,
Victoria remorsefully reveals that she had accepted the Kree contract work as a last ditch effort to avoid bankruptcy. With their funding,
she had completed development of an incredible new source of power but had recently overheard them saying something about using it to 'doom the entire earth'!
Pepper calls Iron Man (who - of course - has a mobile phone built into his armor) so she can share the bad news.

In an outpouring of desperation and bravery, Warbird flies upward in a collision path with the vibro field. She surmises that if she could absorb the
energy of a white hole, then perhaps she could somehow endure absorbing the energy of the vibro field as well. She manages to break through!
Evidently the vibro field had been fueling the SENTRY's strength for once it was broken, Iron Man is able to strike a crushingly disabling blow upon SENTRY.
Iron Man begins to chase the Legionaires when he suddenly notices that without the vibro field to hold it in place, the Power Plant building has begun to collapse upon itself.
Iron Man abandons the chase in order to rescue as many people as possible but Warbird continues to follow the Kree soldiers.

Police arrive to take Victoria Snow into custody as a saddened Tony Stark mourns the consequences of his old friend's recent actions.
This only serves to deepen Stark's concern regarding the potential consequences of the choices
Carol Danvers has been making and perhaps will be called upon to make in the near future...

Quite a relief that the comicbook character Marie Danvers returned to her original appearance after Uncanny X-Men #171

    The Alley.
Storm greets her new subjects, and commands them not to attack the "surface dwellers" any longer.
As she leaves Callisto - weak enough that she can barely stand - intercepts her.
They exchange unpleasantries and Storm tells Sunder to put his mistress back to bed.
Nightcrawler notes that Storm is going out of her way to make an enemy of Callisto, to which Storm responds they were moments from the instant they met.
Nightcrawler is troubled about Storm's shifting personality.

    Anchorage.
Madelyne Pryor wakes up from a nightmare, and Scott comes running.
After she calms down she tells Scott about the 747 crash only she walked away from.
She gives the date as September 1, 1980 - and Scott is shocked to realize that is the exact day Jean Grey died!

    Massachusetts.
Carol Danvers finishes a visit to her folks. However, she's setting her folks on edge and she feels empty.
She knows they're her parents and that she's supposed to care for them, but she doesn't - those feelings were stolen by Rogue.

She concludes there is no place for her on Earth - Binary's place is among the stars!

    Xavier's.
Kitty is frantically searching her room for her computer disks with her homework on them
and blaming the New Mutants (X-Babies) for stealing or misplacing them.
Her roommate Illyana makes fun of her when she finally finds them under her keyboard.

In the Danger Room, Charles is running a gym setting to work on his leg muscles.
    Both he and Lilandra remain mystified as to why he cannot walk in his new cloned body;
since his paraplegic condition was caused by his legs being crushed and not genetic, his legs should be perfectly functional!
In the kitchen, Colossus is pondering a cookbook when Professor X psychically tells him they have a visitor.
Because he used Peter's codename, he knows there might be trouble, and he shifts into his armored form as he opens the door to discover... Rogue?

    Professor X's study.
We discover Professor X cannot read her mind. She tells them that her powers are out of control,
that permanently absorbing Carol's powers was an accident, and that she needs help.
The X-Men are suspicious, and eventually Professor X asks them to leave so he can talk to Rogue in private without all the hostility.
The X-Men resolve to vent their frustrations in the danger room.

Despite it being Kitty who wanted to hit something, she and Illyana end up in the control booth.
Illyana picks out the program, and when Kitty asks what it is Illyana tells her its a surprise.
However, when the program comes up Belasco, even Illyana is briefly surprised before flipping out.
As if possessed, she draws her Soulsword for the FIRST time from nowhere and attacks Kitty.
Kitty phases, but the Soulsword still cuts her! Kitty disarms her, and Illyana comes to her senses - crying out "I remembered!".
The other X-Men arrive in the control booth and Kitty hides the full nature of the incident, waving it off as an accident for Illyana's sake.

    Later, Ororo's Attic.
She notices her plants are parched and starts a rainstorm to water them.
However, while she has an angst-ridden internal monologue she loses control of her storm and is reminded only by the sound of thunder.
She clears the clouds, but the plants have already been ruined!
Professor X contacts her telepathically, and she responds by hurling a dagger through his thought-image!

    Professor X's study.
Charles has decided to admit Rogue to both the school and as a probationary X-Men member.
Storm objects - as leader of the X-Men she feels she has a say, and is unwilling to take on a member who might betray them!
At that moment, Binary lands outside the X-Mansion and enters.
After a moment of peace we suddenly see Rogue flying through the roof, getting knocked clear into orbit!
Rogue comes back for more and Binary gives it to her. But then Colossus holds Binary down and breaks up the fight.

Professor X explains that Rogue is under his protection as of now, and Binary complains.
It is Storm who tells Binary that Rogue is now the newest X-Man.

A puzzled Rogue doesn't even know why Binary has it in for her, until Binary shifts to her human (looking) form!

Rogue speaks Carol's name under her breath. Carol tells Rogue that she now has the power to destroy her.
Storm tells Professor X that if Rogue stays, she goes - and Nightcrawler says they all will.
Professor X talks the X-Men through the impasse -

Carol concedes understanding but not approval, and leaves in a huff.
Storm, however, is also uncertain and goes to take a walk to decide whether she will stay or leave.
She realizes, either way, that she will no longer be the woman she was.

I'd have been perfectly fine with retiring the swimsuit, but the designer should have retained the look and feel -- instead of starting from scratch (and using Superman's color scheme -- which is kinda boring). Well, at least the long hair is back. Carol seems more like the Carol I remember in Life of Captain Marvel -- and that's a good sign.

    Captain Marvel #5 Sep 1968
    "The Mark of the Metazoid"
Aboard the Kree vessel over the Earth, Mar-Vell is put on trial by Yon-Rogg for being "Un-Kree" by allowing
the Sub-Mariner to win a battle and prevent the people of Earth from being infected with bacteria (as seen last issue).
However, after much consideration, Ronan decides to judge Mar-Vell based on his future actions in being able to carry out his mission.
He orders Mar-Vell to kill Mr. Logan the one man who may hint at Mar-Vell's identity.
Mar-Vell gets out of killing Logan by suggesting that killing Logan would attract unwanted attention and erasing his memory would be better.
Ronan agrees and allows Mar-Vell to see things his own way.

Back on Earth, Communist agents are plotting to capture Walter Lawson by sending their latest
super-powered agent the Metazoid -- a being mutated to have the metabolism of 50 men -- to capture Lawson.
Meanwhile, Mar-Vell returns to Earth and assumes his identity as Lawson.
Returning to the Cape he deflects the suspicions of Carol Danvers about "Lawson's" activities.

Traveling to the hospital where Logan is recovering, Mar-Vell is attacked by the Metazoid before he can erase Logan's memories.
Changing into his Kree armor, Mar-Vell battles, but tries to avoid killing the creature.

However, when physical might, and his Uni-Beam prove useless against the Metazoid,
Mar-Vell is forced to expose the Metazoid to an x-ray machine which proves to be lethal to the Metazoid.
After the death of his attacker, Mar-Vell succeeds in using the memory eraser on Logan,
and quickly flees when doctors stumble in upon Mar-Vell when he's completed his job.

Script by Arnold Drake, pencils by Don Heck, inks by John Tartaglione
