Anyway, 48 hours to me is the funnier of the two between it and Beverly Hills Cop. BHC hit harder in spots but I've always liked Reggie Hammond more than Axel Foley. Both great, funny movies but 48 hours is more...RAW (see what I did there). I also think my dad caved in and got HBO around this time and that brought a lot of these movies into peoples homes before VHS took off.
E.T. man, that was a thing yo. I think I've sat through it once since the time I saw it first run, I think even as a kid you can tell when a movie is a little too heavy on the feels knowwhatImean. Once I got older though I've always enjoyed Close Encounters much more, I've probably seen it more times over the years than I care to admit and anytime it's on I'm in it for a spell.
To answer the question though John Carpenter's The Thing rules time and space for me. I didn't even ever see it until the late 90's but it's one of my top 5 favorite movies of all time. One of the rare movies I've owned across three formats.
