If they end up cutting Romo, it won't speed things up as they will wait and make him a June 1 cut to spread the cap hit over 2 years instead of one. He counts over $19 mill if cut before then, but only $12.7 this year and the rest next year if he's cut after June 1. If he isn't traded (which, really who's going to take that salary with his injury history), he will linger on the roster until June 1 and not be able to sign with another team until after the first round of OTA's are done.

Any team interested in Romo will likely ask him to rework his contract to make a trade possibly happen.

And he can easily kibosh a trade to any team he doesn't want to go to by refusing to do so. He even said he expects to be released not traded when asked about it a day or so ago.

They will likely do a Joe Montana type situation and let Romo look at some teams he may consider to trade with and redo his contract for that. In 1993 , the Chiefs traded Montana that way as Joe more or less conducted a free agent deal. The Arizona Cardinals offered the 49ers a better 1st round pick and compensation on a trade. But Joe selected KC , and Eddie DeBartlo Jr let him go there on a trade.

Given that Jones and Romo have a good relationship , he will likely agree to this type of move.

That assumes the teams he wants to go to want him and think he s worth the risk, the money and the compensation. Romo has nowhere near the pedigree Montana had, and has a lot more question marks regarding his health and durability than Montana did. For a team to be willing to take the risk, they need to already be or nearly be Super Bowl contenders but teams in that position are rarely QB needy. The teams that are QB needy are not really teams that will be ready in the window Romo has left. There are 2 or 3 teams that maybe fit the bill, but they all have cheaper and possibly more durable options in house and likely won't give up much for Romo even if he takes a massive paycut to play for them.

I like Romo, I'm a fan of what he did, but the NFL is a business and the business aspects of his situation work massively against him. Teams pay for ability and the greatest ability in the NFL is availability. Romo has played in 5 of the last 32 NFL games his team has played, and not all of those were full games. It's going to take a massive number of moving pieces fitting in the right slot for the Cowboys to deal him. Their best hope is a contender suffers a Bridgewater like injury at QB early in OTAs before they cut him on June 1st or some other miracle. Otherwise they will likely have to give him away and be lucky if they get a 6th or 7th rounder for him, and they still take a cap hit if they trade him, so it might not even be worth their while.

Jerry is still suffering from the delusion he can convince Tony to stay as a back up and restructure, Tony is convinced he will be released not traded, and no one in the League is convinced any team will give up anything of value for him with his contract and durability issues. It'd be great if the Cowboys could trade him and get something back, but the only people who think it will happen are the Monday morning armchair GMs who think running their fantasy team gives them an insight into how the NFL works as a business and the ESPN talking heads who have nothing else to talk about in the offseason to fill their 24/7 newscycle so keep recycling where will Romo end up stories every day.

Before Romo even gets close to a trade , a team will request his contract be reworked to allow it. If a deal happens , Romo will redo his contract. If Denver wants to send a 3rd or 4th to the Cowboys , Romo will redo his contract to make the number doable. Elway has proclaimed he's gonna spend this year so he may view Romo as a good stop-gap til Lynch is ready. Let him learn from Romo awhile and step in.

Tony Romo wants to start again and he'll make a push for that.

    Romo ain't no Joe Cool.

He's gonna have to take a big cut and play for a really bad team if he wants to keep playing.

You know why Joe Montana got that deal?

... because he was freaking Joe Montana.

You guys are going to be really surprised when Dallas gets draft pick(s) from another team for Romo. Yes, he's not Joe Montana, but there are a lot of QB starved teams who will overpay for Romo's services. Just watch

Joe Montana wasn't the Joe Montana of 1989. He hadn't played in 2 full seasons and folks questioned how healthy he would be heading into 1993. And really only 2 teams wanted Joe's services then. One was Arizona where Montana threw a few passes to Gary Clark as a small warm up deal. Then there was Kansas City where Joe met Marty who told him he was gonna change his run 1st offense to a west coast system under Paul Hackett.

Romo will have a few teams interested . The following teams will likely contact Dallas.

    Houston Texans*
    Miami Dolphins*
    Cleveland Browns
    Buffalo Bills*
    Denver Broncos*
    Chicago Bears

The teams with the stars are the ones close to a Super Bowl run perhaps and need a QB. Miami is trying to work a trade for Julius Thomas (TE) to add fire power to that offense . So having a QB with a good arm like Romo could be too much too resist right now.

But, if Romo wants a chance to compete for a Super Bowl, that AIN'T happening in Miami, Cleveland, Buffalo or Chicago while Houston is iffy at best. His best chance would be with Denver.

Not really. It's stupid to take him for picks when you could get him for less as a FA. But there are teams that won't want to wait, so I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest.

Joe Montana was a first ballot HoF by that point in his career. Had 4 rings, too. Romo is neither of those things. Taking a chance on Joe, injuries or not, made sense. There's a plethora of back-ups that offer less stakes than taking on Romo.

Does this mean a team won't take Romo? Heck no. I expect it. But the smart teams are going to wait for him to be cut. He's not worth a 1st-5th pick. You'd be better off trying to find the next Tom Brady in the draft.

The other teams are close and need that QB. They will be likely viewing his services and all. Denver has Simian and Lynch. With Lynch the long term guy. So of course they may jump 1st and have Romo redo his contract to make a trade happen. Of course the Dolphins its reported plan to be a BIG SPLASH this year in free agency and could be thinking ..once we get Thomas at TE , with our WR's and RB ...we are close to a run.

This draft is considered weak on QB's. One scout has said he wouldn't take a QB in the 1st round given how weak the QB's are this year . Its said McCarron and Jimmy Garrapolo is more ready to start and better than any draft prospect coming out this season. Its a weak draft for QB's. Even if Watson goes in the 1st round.

Joe Montana had suffered elbow injuries and surgery , missing 2 years. He was Joe Montana sure and had 4 Super Bowl rings. But folks wondered how well he could return from that and start without a Jerry Rice and John Taylor. Its why there was only 2 real teams that had interest in him for a trade.

First of all, you're assuming Dallas would cut Romo if they can't trade him. He would be a valuable backup in case Dak got hurt. They could hold onto to him for one more year if they wanted to.

Second, even if Dallas was dumb enough to just cut him, only one team is going to sign him. Teams know this and don't want to gamble that Romo chooses another team over them. Therefore, they'll be willing to trade for him.

Romo will ask to approve the trade and likely have to redo his contract for that to happen though. His cap hit is one teams will wanna bring down before he comes in. I mean , everyone knows Tony Romo won't be approving a trade to the Cleveland Browns and even if they took his full salary on (and they have massive cap room) , he would say NOPE. And nix a trade and even refuse a physical. And Jones relationship with Romo as close as he is , he's gonna let Romo likely do what Montana did and visit the teams that are close and go from there if they wanna do a trade.

Dallas will get a 3rd round pick I'm sure for Romo. He's not worth more than that.

Difler thinks Romo goes for a 4th or 5th, Jimmy G would go for a 3rd or 4th.

Apparently the Bears are the only ones looking to deal for Romo and Jimmy G. 2nd or 3rd rounders.

Romo, like Cousins, would get more money as a FA. I guess it depends on what he wants. To play? To win? To get paid?

The latest rumors are that the Pats and Dallas won't be dealing either.

Romo would be a good back-up for Dak.
