Actually, I was reading Alan Davis's Excalibur run and I was surprised at how it was pretty much explicitly stated as opposed to just subtext. Rachel referred to Kitty as "my love" the entire time in addition to talking about their special bond together.

Not much of a retirement as Rachel was dragged back a few times already and she didn't even get a Boy/Girlfriend during her 8+month time away from the X-Men. Must really have been lonely, especially watching the world go down the gutter in an empty house/apartment.

No idea. Looks like it was just penciled or inked. It could even be from Gold #3 really. But i think you are right and it's from Prime or Gold #1. I know storylines are thought up months in advance. But art might be the last minute thing.

And yeah..I wish they looked happier but hey...the colors might make the difference.
