I like when they portray Peter's reverence of Rogers as an important figure of his Aunt and Uncle's generation. I think that's appropriate.
Also, a fact that gets ignored often, is Peter used to actually be a comicbook fan growing up. We know for a fact that he read and enjoyed Captain America comics. if he idoizes Cap from time to time, it make sense. The guy WAS his idol growing up.

he can't really mess things up worse than the heroes who've been more commonly trusted/respected by the superhero community (and maybe public) at large despite having some seriously shady actions in their past published history.
I think that's a completely different discussion. Within the last ten years or so, Marvel has gone way past "flawed heroes" straight to the point of "fairly horrible people that sometimes fight crime (but more often each other.)"

That sounds more like the Ultimate comics. Excluding both versions of Spider-Man, pretty much all the superhero leads of the various series seemed to be jerks at the best of times.

Unfortunately, it's becoming more and more the mainline comics as well; just look at Civil War II and now Inhumans Vs. X-Men, and even before that, Avengers Vs. X-Men and the situation in Jonathan Hickman's Avengers with the Illuminati and going into Time Runs Out/Secret Wars.
The spider is always on the hunt.
