    Hi Everyone,
This is my first post in this community so if there is a better place to post this please let me know.

I am looking to do my first custom bind and have narrowed it down to houchen or herring and robinson. I am leaning toward houchen so I can do a graphic cover.

I want to bind my Ultimate Spider-Man collection, which totals 33 TPBs. I want to have it in chronological order, so this will require breaking apart a few of the trades to alternate issues. I have no idea how to do this properly. I was planning on taking the covers off before shipment, but what is the best way to break a few of these down further?

I also don't have photoshop and was wondering if there were any easy to use alternatives for those who aren't artistically inclined.

Sorry if this is confusing, thanks for any advice!

That sounds like a cool project. As far as breaking up the trades go, just using a heat source against the spines glue should be fine, like a hair dryer or electric heater. It's not a big deal if you separate them and end up with a few lose pages, just organise the pages in order and tie each set separately, it will be fine.

Also, you can use the freeware editing tool GIMP https://www.gimp.org to make the covers. It has lots of info online if you need to learn something specific. Something as simple as making guides (vertical or horizontal lines) will make your life a lot easier.

My piece of advice would be to make sure the covers are exactly the dimensions they ask you for. Ask them to be specific about the extra boarder space they expect. Also try to use the absolute highest quality art & highest ppi possible. Example, it might default to 50 dpi/ppi in the settings. Try to up that to ~300 or so. That's a x6 increase in picture sharpness when you give it to them to print.

Finally, as the front and back cover size will be pretermined (only the spine will be different), because you are usibg standard trades, you can ask for those dimensions ahead of time and work on them right away.

Don't be afraid to ask about something or Google peoples covers or check people's covers on hear for ideas.

Thanks, I’ll definitely check out the software! What’s the beatbox way to retain the first and last page of the book? I head some methods of separation can take those along with the covers.

The 1st and last page can come off with the cover, but like the spine, just apply some heat on the glue and separate them.

Can I ask why the Negation series is your next project? I hadn't heard of it before now.

I picked the #0 issue up at a comic con, I'm going to be honest and admit that the cover looked cool... Anyway, I collected the rest in single issues and I absolutely loved it! It turns out that Negation is one series in a bunch by CrossGen, and I want to read the rest too, eventually. Anyway, it was friggin awesome and HC collected editions are hard to get, even the SCs were pricey last I saw. So I might as well get a sparkly new one of my own

I didn't bother to identify which are merely excerpts...which is only like 2-4 issues I think.

Anyway, definitely one of my topmost best binds and just one of my best ideas, period.

Very cool man...thanks for the peek at the TOC.

Literally just went through all 70 pages of this thread after discovering it 2 hours ago. Wow......there are some really nice custom binds in here. Way beyond what I thought was possible. Makes me want to go home and look for things to bind haha.

I don't know if they do graphic covers but you should ask. They're really great to talk to with friendly and knowledgeable staff. I didn't ask about graphic covers because truth be told I haven't used Photoshop in close to a decade, so I'm more then a little rusty. So I'm just focusing on good old fashioned cloth covers for now as really my main goal in binding is to get my comics out of the bags and boards and on a shelf . But yeah definetly, you ask them if that's something they do.
