Selene wasnt an enemy in that issue. The X-men and the HFC had a truce and were actually allies during this era. Selene, for what it was worth, was minding her own business, when Rachel attacked her in bed. It wouldnt have made sense for him to go in there and basically ignite a war with them by killing an innocent Selene. Its not like she was the aggressor who targeted Rachel. If that were the case, then yeah Wolverine should have attacked her instead, but thats not how it went down. There was no fight. Rachel was clearly aggressor there

An aggressor who was about to kill an evil entity whose very existence requires sucking out the life forces of usually innocent people... and really enjoying the process. Killing Selene at that exact moment might have been murder but it certainly would be justifiable re: saving further lives from Selene's hunger.

The X-men dont murder, at least that was their mantra at the time. And again, doing so would have started a war. Storm joined the HFC and went into a truce for a reason. She did not approve of Rachel trying to kill Selene the first time and most definitely wouldnt here

well it was and one needs the proper context to understand why he did what he did. He was trying to prevent another Dark Phoenix situation as Rachel had been acting erratic and abusing her power leading up to this. Letting Rachel murder Selene in cold blood would have led to her crossing a line she couldnt get back from. She had already shown that she was willing to destroy the world (and thus kill everyone on Earth) in order to get rid of the Beyonder. She had no boundaries and Wolverine stabbing her effectively did save her from herself and everyone else from a potential larger threat if she continued to get out of control

She was so out of control that she never went on to become the DP. . .besides abusing her power isn't what led to Jean becoming the DP it was someone attacking her. GJ Logan.

Still that's not the root of the problem it's the fact that he was a straight up hypocritter. Let's not forget that Selene went on to take two lives immediately afterwards.
