Gerard Way is as good a choice as any of current writers. Anyone who has read Umbrella Academy knows that his work is very heavily influenced by Morrison's Doom Patrol.

Besides him, I'd say Gillen, Ewing, and Paknadel could bring the appropriate level of weirdness. I'd also like to see Valentine give it a shot.

Not going to lie, looks pretty dope. Certainly has a distinctive style and attitude to it. I had kind of a fun concept for Doom Patrol once, though I don't think it quite captured the weirdness that defines the property. There aren't many writers today who are doing that kind of work.

Oh no. The Hipster Patrol. They do super heroics ironically. On second thought I hope this doesn't happen. That design for Negative Man is pretty awful. The bandages are such a cool and creepy look I have no idea why someone would want to change it.

Honestly if you removed Robotman, how would anyone even know it was the Doom Patrol.

Doom Patrol, more than most books, should be totally reinvented and repopulated from the ground up every run. The only thing to keep is the theme of keeping things weird and wonderful. Everything else is malleable to me.

This thread/news makes me want to go back and re-read Umbrella Academy.

And also the Pollack run on Doom Patrol, which I don't think I really 'got' the first time I read it, despite being impressed with a lot of the ideas at play.

The best thing about the Giffen run, for me, was that he used "the old faces" but gave them all new spins, new approaches, and really, the only continuing part was that they were recognizable faces. That's a kind of brilliance on its own, like when the first person realized a paper plate makes an awesome picnic frisbee.

There are ongoing books/concepts where I think the talent are best off focusing on what makes it work and the tradition, and then there are those like Doom Patrol, John Constantine, or Ninja Turtles, where the concept is best as a facilitator for whatever the talent want to deal with. There is no baseline DP approach. For it to work well, there has to be a new, personal approach found and committed to. Trying to just "service the trademark" with DP just gets you a boring comic.

(Now, I'm a little sad Mark Waid definitely won't be writing a Doom Patrol comic any time soon.)

Earth 1 OGN sounds like a solid option.
