Default Batman Second Chances Graphic Novel Review (Canon Read Through #24)

Im back with another review. Would've had this out sooner but I had to go back and read Crisis on Infinite Earths and what an F on that was (dunno if Im allowed to swear here...what do you mean im a nerd and wouldnt swear anyway..)

    Anyway

Second Chances is my lowest scoring book in the run so far. I hated it.

Don't believe me, see my review to see why I didnt F very heavily with batman fighting a Grandma and the introduction of Jason Todd.

I'll say this...there are the main title monthly comics and there are graphic novels/specialized titles.

While it's true that LOTDK was in a monthly title, it's not even quite the same as doing the work on Batman or Detective. Year One was in Batman, but not made in the same as the rough and tumble of a more regular comic writer getting a main title gig.

So you have to remember that. And I can see why your first review foray into a run in a main title would leave you cold vs a Long Halloween type top writer/top artist/top colorist full court press effort.

I liked Batman Second Chances but is an somewhat incomplete affair of a trade. It's all or most of Max Allan Collins who is a very retro writer in terms of sensibility (and it can rub some fans the wrong way, because he comes from the Dick Tracy kinda school of pulp), and it's not all of Starlin's Batman run, which overall I really enjoyed.

I think I might be saying that I felt your review maybe didn't acknowledge how somewhat different Batman Second Chances is circumstantially from what you have reviewed before.

Things I love: Batman, Superman, AEW, old films, Lovecraft

Grant Morrison: “Adults...struggle desperately with fiction, demanding constantly that it conform to the rules of everyday life. Adults foolishly demand to know how Superman can possibly fly, or how Batman can possibly run a multibillion-dollar business empire during the day and fight crime at night, when the answer is obvious even to the smallest child: because it's not real.”

I loved this book, but I agree with many of your points, but I have a very low liking things threshhold.

Most of the stories from the main Batman series of that era didn't age that well, Dick's and Tim's origin stories from that time (Year Three and A Lonley Place of Dying) also don't hold up imo, or just look for exampe at Year Two or Dearh in the Family.

Yeah, I probably was a bit more critical on it as I knew that The Cult was coming next and this just felt like a real road block that i HAD to get through. Perhaps it would be more enjoyable if you were just picking it up to kill a couple of hours but it was a bit of a slog through.

Thanks for checking out the reviews anyway. Much love <3

I liked it enoug for Jason`s character and showing off the Gotham slums but I can see why some wouldn`t. It doesn`t have a modern sense of dinamic.

Then again, you right out of the bat dislike Batman lauhing in Crime Alley and I think that funnily shows alot. It`s very much a powerful moment exactly because he`s not walling in self pity, which by the way, didn`t really become a thing until Jason dies.

The story is written in a more classic (Bronze Age ?) style, while most of thee other novels he reviewed sofar, followed a more modern style.

I think the story makes imo a good job in introducing Jason and its imo unfortunate hat it is ofen reduced to Jason just stealing Batmans tieres, but it doesn't really hold up by modern standards. Ma Gun is not really a great villain and there have been two-face stories than the second part of the story.
The pre crisis origin has with Killer Croc a much better villain, on top having (almost ?) Batmans entire Rogues gallery and the complete Batfamily it, but had a far less interesting Jason.
