I hear the Darth Vader series is really good, are there any other SW series from the last few years that are particularly good (or bad)?

"Doctor Aphra" is pretty good. (It is written by Kieron Gillen, the same guy who wrote the first 2 years of "Darth Vader".)

I've read a couple books from the main series and they were ok. #21 has an amazing cover.
Though it is out of cannon now the best stuff is still the books Dark Horse did before Marvel got the property back. Stuff like Republic, Dark Times, Legacy, and Knights of the Old Republic are still my favorite Star Wars stories. The Marvel stuff is good, but I like the books not about the main movie cast more, and that is what we got with Dark Horse.
The first of the new Marvel series that were really good have been:
- Darth Vader (all of it)
- Star Wars through Vader Down
- C-3PO (one-shot)
- Chewbacca (mini)
- Princess Leia (mini)
Poe, Doctor Aphra, and Darth Maul are a little early to get overly excited about but are off to great starts. The rest were okay to meh. Nothing has been really bad so far.
Over to Dark Horse, the really great stuff was:
- Dark Empire
- Crimson Empire
- Dark Times
- Golden Age of the Sith
- Dark Lords of the Sith & The Sith War
- Legacy
- Purge
- Knights of the Old Republic
- X-Wing: Rogue Squadron
- Tag & Bink
- Tag & Bink Are Dead
- Vector
- The Darth Maul Series
The early Marvel was really hit or miss for me but nostalgia had me remembering it being better than it was. The great stuff was:
- The Wheel Saga
- Han Solo and the Star Hoppers (Eight For Aduba-3)
- Take the Tarkin
- Lumiya, the Dark Lady of the Sith (Shira's Story)
- The Search for Han Solo
- First Strike
