I don't think we've done this one, and I thought it might be fun. This week's contest --

DRIVE!

Anything featuring a character behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. So sailboats, hang gliders, skateboards, surfboards, etc., are out. Gotta be something with an engine, and we have to see who's driving.

Jidéhem (as JDM for Jean De Mesmaeker, a name well known by the happy readers of Gaston Lagaffe, which featured a caricature of his own father) was a collaborator of the great Franquin on Gaston and Spirou : his inker, and the one who used to draw the backgrounds. He created also one of the first female heroine of the Franco-Belgium comics : Sophie.


He used to draw and write chronicles about cars in Le Journal de Spirou too, featuring the character Starter. Sophie made her debuts there. Here is the cover of a recent digest of his chronicles :



But it can't be a valid entry for the contest. So here is one that fits the theme : the cover of Le Journal de Spirou n°1596 (14 nov 1968 - a weekly magazine).



Sophie is in the car : it's an intelligent car named Zoé - and "she" is Sophie's friend of course.


Jidéhem passed away last week, the 30th of April. He was 81 years old. RIP.
