I took stand-alone to mean not part of a shared universe, so:
    Watchmen
    V for Vendetta
    The Enigma

I liked a lot of the Elseworld Tales DC did in the late 80s and early 90s.

Since the choices seem to be all over the place, I'll just mention something you should read if you haven't and you like Allred.

Kingdom Come is my favorite for sure, but All Star Superman is really up there. Superman Secret Identity, Green Arrow: The Longbow Hunters.

So, I'm just going to define graphic novels, by the term in which they are comic books not previously serialized as single issues.

    Wonder Woman Earth One
Possibly the best Wonder Woman comic I've ever read, which isn't saying much, since I've been mainly unimpressed with the character besides the Azzarello run. This is a very bold take on the character, I was surprised DC approved of many of the creative decisions Morrison made in this book and I especially liked how there weren't any serious antagonists.

    The Nobody
While I take issue with the quality of the majority of Jeff Lemire's work
The Nobody is Jeff Lemire at his prime, absolutely fantastic.

    Incognegro
Absolutely fantastic period piece. I'm eager to check out the authors other work sometime soon.

    All-Star Superman. Justice League Frontier.
Parental care is way exhausting. Gained insight into what my parents went through when I was a baby. Not fun, but what ya gonna do? (Read comics, obviously.)

    The Dark Knight Returns
Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on a Serious Earth
    All-Star Superman
    Superman: Red Son
    Kingdom Come
    The Great Darkness Saga
New Gods by Jack Kirby. Although I love the entire fourth world storyline, New Gods is definitely the best. That middle chunk, like issues 5-8 are probably the best four comics that came out one after the other. It's incredible.

I'm not a huge Batman fan, but The Long Halloween is one of my all-time favorite books.

Going with a single story that's not collected in previous single issues, I liked a lot of Ross' prestige format books, but especially Batman: War on Crime.
