You know, I always thought a action figure two pack "Captain Marvel dressed as Superman / Superman dressed as Captain Marvel" would be an interesting sell. Just for the silliness factor as people looked at the toys and really wondered what was up with them.
I think restorative nostalgia is the number one issue with comic book fans.
A fine distinction between two types of Nostalgia:

Reflective Nostalgia allows us to savor our memories but accepts that they are in the past
Restorative Nostalgia pushes back against the here and now, keeping us stuck trying to relive our glory days.

A French edition collecting in one oversized album several Marvel Team-Up issues featuring Dr Strange : MTU 76-77-80-81. The cover is the one of Marvel Team-Up 80 - by Rich Buckler, but credited as Ron Validar. (April 1983 : I was nine )

I wonder why he used a pseudonym? you can see it signed Validar/McCleod.

There came a time when the Old Gods died! The Brave died with the Cunning! The Noble perished locked in battle with unleashed Evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!

That sure is a mystery why he used that name from time to time. The entry for Marvel Team up #80 on Comics.org says Rich Bucker "signed as Validar"

Not sure what the significance to him was, but it translates to English as "Validate".

I just had a quick look at the chronological listing of his work on comicbookdb (http://comicbookdb.com/creator_chron.php?ID=412) and my guess would be that he was on contract for DC at the times, thus the pseudonym?

So maybe something similar to the 'Adam Austin' signature instead of 'Gene Colan' in the sixties?

(Thanks, Iron Maiden, for having me enlightened about that kind of legal issue! BTW I hesitated a lot for my entry : 'too many Dooms' as they use to say . There's also one I wanted to dedicated to Tom Cruise, but I'll post it later... )

You are spot-on, Abe; Buckler was under contract to DC. He goes into details about that pen name on this blog (which contains a great interview, a must-read!):

    http://diversionsofthegroovykind.blo...odds-ends.html

Excerpts from the interview in the blog:

"In the late seventies I used the name Validar for many covers I did for Marvel. At that time I was under contract at D.C., so working for the competition could have been viewed as a legal matter since my contract was exclusive. I remember regretting that "exclusive" part almost immediately after making the deal.

So legally I wasn't allowed to work anywhere in comics other than D.C. under my own name. Bummer. What if I wanted to draw the Hulk or Spider-Man again (which I did) or some other character I missed working on? Well, of course I did want to from time to time--and giving in to that urge at Marvel even under a fake name was particularly risky since this could have been considered breach of contract if D.C. found out and decided to do something about it.

...You might be wondering--why the name Validar? Was that the name of an actual person? Actually, it was. I had corresponded with a comics fan named Validar Rann Wyndhelm way back in my fanzine publishing days. We never actually met but we had an intriguing "connection" while we were pen pals for around six months. Eventually we fell out of touch. By using the name Validar in my professional work I was hoping, I guess, that he might notice his name popping up on various published works of mine and that it would eventually smoke him out and we could re-establish contact. Alas, that never happened."

Actually I found some mention of Validar Rann Wyndhelm here. In case anyone is curious.
