Hi
I'm new to comics and noticed some comics, particularly the older ones have numbers written on their covers. Was this a means of keeping stock/inventory for retailers?
I've attached a photo as an example.

Yep. Most likely the date received.
P.S. This board seems to skew a lot towards modern DC and Marvel comics as far as discussions go. I find the CGC boards offer a wealth of information if your interests lie more in older books.
Alas, the discussion on content of Moderns there are slim pickings. They mostly center around which modern book is currently hot on ebay.
