The best costume for Magik remains the original white and black graduation costume with the hood and cloak.

The Bachalo costume was always a stupid design that never made any sense. Its biggest crime was how it changed her armor from an elegant silver design into black spikes for no reason, but it also made her sword a surfboard for no reason and eliminated any chance to use it like a sword or with any finesse, and it served no function other than blatant sex appeal. The only possible explanation for its existence in-universe is that Emma was the one who actually designed it and Illyana doesn't care enough about her appearance to say no, because there is no way Illyana would ever purposely design something so impractical.

The gold costume is a vast improvement for making her look more like a mage-knight instead of a stripper and for making the armor meal and ornate and elegant again like it's supposed to be instead of having random spikes for no reason. But more importantly, its existence is supposed to represent major character development for her, since it was the result of a literal magical girl transformation she underwent while overcoming an aspect of the trauma from her childhood. Going back to the black look is like Sailor Moon regressing to her original transformation and losing her super and eternal transformations for no reason.

I thought they were going for like a Goth Punk look (which I think fits Illyana well).

If that was the intention then they failed miserably. The only time Illyana's ever actually looked goth was in Dead Souls when she thankfully ditched that Bachalo monstrosity and went back to the New Mutants uniform with an added cloak. The black costume is just an 'extreme' 90s stripper outfit that was already 15 years out of date when it was created.

I love Illyana's Bachalo costume and I think it's her best look. It's simple yet very memorable. I thought her golden armor was cool because it felt like a mix of that + the New Mutants training uniform, but the all black is her most iconic look now so it's kind of a given that artists will go back to it sometimes.

I think I would have liked Bachalo's costume more if she wore actual real pants, instead of those weird short stripper porn pants, would have looked less tacky.

Honestly, the all black look is fine! It just needed to be updated and the idea that comics are in a state where we could have a plethora or ornate designs yet Marvel keeps forcing characters into costumes they've worn decades ago. Like there's really no one capable of giving Magik the an updated all black look?!

I thought this was a good design but they should have kept the bangs. Probably a better way to make the Bacchalo costume show less skin than just filling in the boob window.

Talking about EXM: Did they ever follow up on that kid that got into her sword? Sabra or something?

Well… I’m sold. Glad to see Cable featuring prominently in this, whether he ends up being the heir or not, he has a lot of history with Apocalypse that was ignored for the most part during the Krakoan era.

Agreed. And he draws him well too. With his prominence so far in the preview art you’ve shared, I can’t help but think his odds of being the heir are getting better. Not sure yet if I want him to be the heir, or what all that entails (i.e., would he still be a hero or would he have to become a villain in this role?); but IMO the dude needs a status quo change to make him more relevant to the X-line again. So maybe this could be it.
