If I'm not mistaken the x-gene is dubbed that way because it grants the individual eXtraordinary abilities (Uncanny X-Men 1).
And anyway, I believe Nathaniel Essex discovered it before anyone in the 21st Century

When brown Logan is on a 90's thing, it's because the artist used X-Men #1's famous cover as the ref.
