Being a ridiculous super villain with a garish design and a silly name like "Mr. Sinister" but playing it dead serious is still undermining the seriousness of his actions in an insulting way to begin with.
The self aware camp and dark humor at least is more honest about how inherently ludicrous he is, but still can be disarming and make the reminders of how monstrous he is (like when Nanny discovered those discarded children's bodies in the orphanage) more effective. Enjoying a villain for dark humor/entertainment purposes is not the same as thinking he's a hero or "Nazis are cool" or whatever.

There's a balance with nazi characters where you can ridicule them (with either a silly premise, costume and etc) while still showing how morally reprehensible they are. Plus with nazi characters you sometimes you gotta make sure they don't end up being appropriated by white supremacists as a symbol, like how the boys had stormfront played by a jewish actress in the show while in the comic the character is a wasp guy.
