I think we all knew this was coming at some point. The O5 X-men couldn't stay in the future indefinitely. They've already had quite an impact, but with Jean Grey now alive again and Cyclops' revolution turning out to be a non-factor, they really don't have a reason to stick around anymore. I think the time is right for them to go back, preferably in a way that has some meaningful impact on the timeline. If they just went back and didn't really affect anything, then that would make their experiences somewhat redundant. I hope this story does something meaningful with the timeline because them being in the future should effect it. The only question is the extent to which that effect will go.

I can see them going back leading to a few "tweaks," but I don't see Marvel completely upending or revamping large chunks of the timeline. More than anything else, I think this will help set up the return of Uncanny X-men and put the X-books in a position to do their own fresh start. With Wolverine, Jean Grey, and Charles Xavier coming back, they have the necessary pieces in place. It's just a matter of them bringing it all together and this might be part of that.

My only concern is how they'll handle the Cyclops issue. Even with all these returns, the X-men will still be missing one critical character. Love him or hate him, Cyclops is a core character of the X-men. No matter how many heavy hitters Marvel puts on an X-book, omitting Cyclops still constitutes a glaring oversight. That's why I don't think Marvel is going to keep him dead for too long, even if he's absent for a while. They didn't keep Black Widow dead for that long and the Avengers can function without her. However, the X-men can only function so much without Cyclops.

It'll be interesting to see how Marvel handles this. Personally, I hope that it at least sets up Cyclops' return or hints at it. Between his upcoming role in the X-men: Dark Phoenix movie and his historical role with the X-men, I think the X-books will need him eventually.
