Has anyone here made their own website? If so, what platform or software or system did you use to create it? Was there a cost involved? Are you satisfied with it?

Yes , I designed it myself. I use Microsoft Expressions, which was a free WYSIWYG software.
You have to register your domain name, which is less than $10 a year at various websites. And then you have to get a hosting company, I use ICD which cost about $70 a year.
You might run into a few technical roadblocks along the way, but I always find the solutions on the web.

I wasn't able to reply to your PM, but I wanted to thank you for the advice. I decided to try using Google Sites and see how that works out first. But you did give me something to think about.

All you need is an editor and apache and there is no cost other than connectivity

What you require is more down to your needs. If you just want a ready made template for static web pages, I believe word press is the industry standard. https://wordpress.com/

If you want to make a more serious website with dynamic database support. Then learning asp .net core mvc is my recommendation. However that will take a few months of solid study to get a working knowledge of. But Once learned, you will be able to create any website with limitation only constrained by your imagination.
The software you need is Visual Studio, you can get it for free, courtesy of Microsoft https://visualstudio.microsoft.com/v...t-development/

I'm glad that this is still in discussion, though I didn't expect it to be resurrected. Since I posted, I have created several websites for myself and for others. For myself, I prefer Wordpress.com, though I have also worked with Wordpress.org. Those however, may require a monetary investment to get it just right. I didn't mind since I wanted to use my own Domain names.

I am also working on websites using Google Sites, which is cheaper and easier to use in some ways. Those sites are for others who wanted something fast and inexpensive.

I do code somewhat, mostly HTML and CSS and so on. Not yet ready to set up my own server, that may happen in the future.

FWIW - I have run websites since the 1990's and NEVER use Microsoft products, and never use .net ... never ever. And you don't need wordpress either, or or Django, PHP, mod_perl, AJAX, tomcat, power builder, dream weaver, or ruby on rails.

All you needs is a static IP address, apache, 20 minutes to learn an editor, and 20 minutes to learn basic HTML....

that is all you need.

Hello! I made my website through a website builder. I wanted to create a website before myself but with a lack of budget to hire a professional web designer and my lack of coding knowledge, I just decided to create an own website using a website builder since they provide templates and other features. Plus, you can also do the whole domain registration and install other features with them. I used the website builder, hPage - https://www.hpage.com since I find the features suiting for a business website and you can also put up a blog there as well. I think this is the easiest option if you want to create a website right away.

Mrbrklyn, How come we should never use a .net URL, by the way? I was planning to register a domain under .net but decided against it since I might have a chance to buy the .com URL that I originally want (just a bit expensive though while the .net URL isn't taken yet)
