I think you asked for an iconic trinity such as DC trinity (Superman, Batman & Wonder Woman).

Interesting thing, the first two positions are males, but positions 3rd to 5th are female --if the poll were for a quintet, women would beat men. Apart from the duality Cyke/Wolvie, people seem to be much more interested in female characters (or, at least, there are a handful of very powerful female characters).

I don't believe there's a trinity. It would be Scott, Jean, Ororo, and Logan. During the UXM 500 Special, these are the four on the front cover and in the Marvel Heroes board game where every team has four representatives, these four were picked alongside the Fantastic Four and the main Avengers from the films (Cap, Thor, Iron Man, and Hulk). Most non-comic readers will associate these four as well from the original X-Men trilogy (just look at the current blu-ray box set cover) as well as the Apocalypse film. Even in Inferno, when Sinister was attacking Jean's mind, Psylocke picked Scott, Ororo, and Logan to help save Jean.

If I had to pick a trinity it would be either Xavier, Scott, and Jean (they were referred to as the heart and soul of the X-Men in UXM 98) or maybe Scott, Jean, and Ororo (they were called the leaders of the X-Men after X-Tinction Agenda). But Logan has obviously stepped it up since then as leader.

For me it's Cyclops, Wolverine, Storm - like many others though with adult Jean a close fourth. I don't any real way the trinity can't be comprised of three of those four characters, but I'm sure there's justification for Rouge, Beast, Nightcrawler or Kitty. I just don't know what it is.

Cyclops is the noble stalwart. Wolverine is the badass rebel. Storm is the noble rebel / badass stalwart.

This is the best description as to why these three are the trinity.
