I wonder if all of these people are evil versions of Bruce Wayne or just the Batmen (and women) of their universe?

Or maybe versions of those heroes who became Batman instead of their respective identities?

Really curious to see who the Aquawoman Batman is...

Well, they are more "what-if" born out of Batman's fear, apparently.

Snyder took over from there and explained that the Dark Knights are the representation of Bruce’s darkest fears — alternate possibilities to the Batman stories. “They all have origins that we’re really excited about […] they’re the total nightmare Bruce Wayne Batmans.”

“What if Batman experimented with the Doomsday Virus to prevent Superman’s death? And what if that infected all of Metropolis?” Snyder teased, presumably about the Superman-analogue “Nightmare Batman.”

Edit : Also, I really like their look on the promo poster. Especially the Murder Machine, The Drowned and the Merciless. The Red Death, The Destrutor and the Dawnbreaker are great too, but the first three are just perfect for me.
