Pretty sure that my first encounter was a reprint in the pages of JLA, a story of Starman and a blind kid. Somehow, I preferred him when he carried the (relatively limited) gravity rod, as opposed to the near all-powerful cosmic rod. I kind of liked the idea that he could only operate at night.

Just FYI, Payton showed up in Justice League last issue. He's "from the past" and he's carrying Jack Knight/Courtney's cosmic staff. And of course, he comes with dire yet cryptic warnings.

He's far from my preferred Star-person but it was great seeing a Starman on panel again.

I think you'd be much better served by just reading the title. If you liked what Morrison did with his JLA, this'll most likely work for you too. Snyder's pulling strong from the Morrison corner of the DCU, and the book reads like a anthem rock version of Morrison's run; it's not as smart but it's got scope and its bombastic as hell. Its just dumb, loud, and amazing.

Will Payton is back! He was always my favourite Starman (my favourite era of DC was 86-91 so he is definitely my Starman)

Unfortunately, some of us grew tired of Snyder's writing during the New52 . . .

Yeah I’m not a fan of Synder and Payton is not my favorite Starman. I am intrigued with him having Jack and Courtney’s cosmic staff though.

Totally understandable. I'm not Snyder's biggest fan either, and I'm actually not at all fond of Payton (or any Star-person who's not a Knight or Courtney; it's nothing against Payton himself, he's just not a Knight). But I am greatly enjoying Snyder's JL thus far.

You know, him having that staff actually made me feel better about his appearance. I'm a little concerned about why and how he has the staff (and what happened to Courtney), but the fact that he's got it makes me feel like, I dunno, like a "real" Starman has arrived.

Jack was the first. However I didn't read about him in his series. But in the first arc of the 1999 JSA run. I haven't read his series before. Fans hold it such a high regard that it's a turn off for me. Want to see more of Will though.
Imagine being proud to have negative traits. I can’t relate.

I wanna say the original, from the old JLA/JSA crossovers, but I can’t remember if he was in them or not. So I went with Jack, because I do remember reading his book, and how amazing his book was, and how well Robinson developed him and his cast. One of the best titles DC has ever put out.
