Interestingly enough, at last check the Golden Age Starman (Ted Knight) was in the lead with 41 votes on this poll, but next is a tie between Will Payton and Jack Knight for second place with 23 votes for each.
Thom Kallor/Danny Blaine (Star Boy from LSH, but Starman in Geoff John's Justice Society of America run) was in 4th place with eleven votes.
Ted was my first - in the old Justice Society digests.
My mum would buy me a comic a week, and still remember the JSA BLEW. MY. MIND.
"My name is Wally West. I'm the fastest man alive!"
I'll try being nicer if you try being smarter.
Yeah, I voted for Ted Knight, since the JSA Starman was the first 'Starman' I'd read about, even if I'd probably read about the Legion and Thom Kallor as Star Boy (back when he had all the powers of Superboy and lightning-vision) even before then.
Man, they've had some crazy outfits, these Starmen. My favorite would have to be Star Boy's starfield, 'though!
Will Payton (Starman #1, October 1988) was the first I read about directly.
"So you've come to the end now alive but dead inside."
The most recent numbers show:* Golden Age Starman (Ted Knight) = 42 votes (+1)
* Will Payton (1988) = 25 votes (+2)
* Jack Knight (younger son of Ted) = 24 votes (+1)
* Thom Kallor/Danny Blaine (Star Boy from LSH) = 11 votes (no change)
* Prince Gavyn (1980) = 4 votes (+1)
* "Starman" of 1950's (Bruce Wayne in 1957; later changed to Charles McNider) = 2 votes (no change)
* Farris Knight (Starman of the 853rd century) = 1 vote
Technically, the Golden Age Starman, but I probably didn't realize it at the time. I started reading comics shortly before Zero Hour, so I saw the JSA in the Zero Hour miniseries, without knowing who they were. In the Zero Month that followed, I bought Starman #0 just to see what it was, so that's the first Starman I remembered reading at that time. But I've since learned more about the JSA, so now I realize that I saw his father in Zero Hour first.
Just re-reading my old collection, filling in the occasional gap with back issues, not buying anything new.
Currently working my way through 1990's Flash, Impulse, and JLA, and occasional other related stuff.
Figured I'd update the numbers from this poll. With 114 people having voted,* Golden Age Starman (Ted Knight) = 44 votes
* Will Payton (1988) = 27 votes
* Jack Knight (younger son of Ted) = 24 votes
* Thom Kallor/Danny Blaine (Star Boy from LSH) = 12 votes
* Prince Gavyn (1980) = 4 votes
* "Starman" of 1950's (Bruce Wayne in 1957; later changed to Charles McNider) = 2 votes
* Farris Knight (Starman of the 853rd century) = 1 vote
