I had heard of Jack and Ted Knight but Thom was the first one I read in a comic.

Ted was my first Starman - in the JSA 90 page digests my mum would buy me from the newsagent!!

Will Payton was my first. Picked up #1 when it came out and read most of his run. But when I read Jack Knights series years later I was blown away. He is MY Starman now. Hands down the best. Will is still cool though.

I voted Jack Knight (3 yrs ago), but just realized it may have technically been Ted Knight, in the pages of Zero Hour a month earlier. At the time, I didn't know his name, but I know I recognized him from what would have been Strazewski's 1992 series (that I skipped because I had no appreciation for Parobeck-style art at the time).

I’m actually a little surprised that Ted has such a commanding lead. I would have thought Will or Jack would be leading.

Depends on when / what people started reading DC comic books.
Will's series ran from 1988-1992, and Jack was introduced in 1994.

Ted was in some of the JLA/JSA annual meetings during the pre-CoIE days and was still around post-CoIE (with a little time off during the JSA's Ragnarök period).

Ted was my introduction to the character through reading JSA.
That said, Jack was the character who I followed every month from start to finish.

On most of these "who was the first" threads I find myself referring back to the same issue over and over - Justice League of America 100. This issue was my introduction not only to the JLA but the JSA (including Ted Knight Starman) and Seven soldiers of Victory as well.

I never realised just how much of an impact that one issue had on my love of DC comics.

I bought Justice League of America #101 off a spinner rack at a drug store in Kennebunkport, Maine for my oldest sister the summer it came out when my parents and I were on vacation. (My sister was working at a summer camp and had asked my Mom to buy her the comic books she normally would get at the local stationary store when my Mom went there to get her magazines.)

After reading that issue, I fell in love with the JSA and the idea of all those Golden Age heroes.
(I even dressed up as Golden Age Flash for Halloween that October.)

This is a bit convoluted. I was in a collector's toy store, and they had some DCD stuff. I remember, Hourman 1,3, and a Starman 1 BUT his leg broken iirc. So no way was I buying him at their inflated prices, but boy did he look interesting. I'd never really been into DC much, and was just making my way back into comics in general. So I traded my stuff for Hourman 1 (weird for an X-Men guy, right? But I've been a JSA loyalist since) and that was the best decision I've made, comics-wise.

I went home and started researching this Starman guy, starting with the figure. I may be getting my timelines mixed up here, but I think volume 1 of his Archives were available, so i grabbed a copy of that cheap, and I was off to the races, along with some book called the JSA by some guys called Goyer, Robinson, and Johns. Purely as a lark, no way I'd like that, right?

Now I'm a fan of the family, but Ted's still my favourite. He's the beat that drives the drum of future generations of his name. I wish we had a Robinson quality book all about Ted. That'd be amazing. But not green hood. I hate the green hood look for Ted.

And it all started with an overpriced figure with a broken leg.
