That phrase can be finished in any number of ways, other than the most obvious one. It all depends on what you want to prove. Had JMS intended it to be a clear declaration, he would've kept going for a few words more.

This is why comics are an inferior medium.

Any artifice is read as wiggle room. It sucks all the life out of the storytelling.

In comics, if you don't tell, definitively and with an unimpeachable narrator, nothing is true.

Wiggle room is very important, when we're talking about an story, which had editorial interference, ambiguity can be seen as a compromise.

It's literally written right there on the page. Peter did not test his own DNA because he knew Gwen and him never had sex. He would have tested his own DNA if he knew they had sex before. He did not test his DNA therefore they did not have sex.

Yeah the pattern seems to be you just dont want it to be true. Its not just a truncated phrase its a more subtle way of not just saying "he never ..... our mom". There really is no doubt here. Creators has even confirmed it in various interviews.

Besides from what I remember Gwen and Peter had a fairly old fashioned innocent romance. So it's not far from the realm of possibilities that they didn't have sex yet. Nothing wrong with that.
