Heh. MJ was - intentional or not - a feminist character inserted into a mainstream comic book during a period of social upheaval.

    Still is a feminist character.

I think she falls right in the middle of the "empowered vs exploited" dilemma. Feminists haven't agreed on that one yet, so I doubt we'll come to any clear conclusion, in a comic book forum.

An autonomous female character defined by her own wants rather than her relation to men. Those may be the bare bones of a good character, but sadly that was once (and often still is) an achievement all itself.

If you want to get into the weeds of competing schools of thought, nothing ever has, nor ever will, qualify.

MJ's a feminist in-universe. It would make perfect sense for her to wear that shirt .

wow did you just " Label" MJ a Feminist? lol so you put her in with America, mockingbird, wasp, she-thor? no sir.

she wouldn't own that shirt, she'd use it as a dust rag...

I always though of MJ as a sure of herself, structurally sound strong woman who has been a strong role model for women!

Um...yeah? Because she is one, at least as I understand the feminist movement. I would say that's probably one of the things she has in common with those women.

I don't disagree with any of those descriptions for Mary Jane but I don't think that prevents her from being a feminist, more pointing towards why she is one.

Autonomous? I don't recall her source of income as being ever specified. The one time she tried to get paid for one gig, it turned out to be a scheme by Winkler.

She's had multiple jobs though, from modeling, to acting, to running her own club. Renew Your Vows has her running her own boutique.

She's never just relied on Peter for income.

Why wouldn't MJ, a twenty-something woman involved in the New York City cultural scene, wear that shirt?
    Sincerely,

Because she's totally not like those other girls™?

But on a serious note, I agree. It would be "in-character" for MJ to wear it. Obviously the shirt continuing to pop up is the various writers way of showing solidarity with Chelsea Cain, which is cool.

As a character, MJ definitely believes in equality between genders. Many people, myself included, have seen too many examples of behavior from feminists that betrays the idea of equality between the genders. Thus, despite the technical definition that feminists love to quote, many people do not associate feminism with gender equality. So, the answer to the debate you all are having has more to do with your own personal experiences with feminists and less to do with MJ as a character. If you think feminists are genuinely working towards equality, then you'll find MJ to be a feminist. If you think feminists are working towards something else, you will not find MJ to be a feminist.

Plus, in her modeling and acting career, MJ has perpetuated "impossible" body image standards that feminists love to hate. So, feminists would probably cannibalize MJ if we're applying this to real life =P Then again, it is completely case by case. Some girl named Mercedes something did porn and was pro-gamergate so feminists said you can't trust the word of a porn actress. But when Zoe Quinn tried to do porn, it was called empowering for women because she was one of the main anti-gamergate activists. So, it's just double-standards as far as the eye can see... which brings me back to why different people will see the same thing as either consistent with, or not consistent with, MJ's character.
Me: "Wanna be Hawkeye and Hawkeye next Halloween?"
My wife: "Only if I get to be Clint."
