I use to have a low opinion of the Atom, but I've come around to liking his stupid ways; however, he's no Hawkman. None of the other characters fully represents the entire run of the JSA from the '40s--many members fell out early on, others came later and a few returned after a long absence. So Hawkman wins.
Remember, Flash (Jay) and Green Lantern (Alan) were original members who only went to "honorary member" status once they earned their own solo-titles, and even that "rule" was eventually dropped, bringing them back aboard as regular, full-time members.

But that meant they sat out most of the war and weren't actively involved with the Justice Battalion (retcons not withstanding). They only returned to active service in early '45, when Max Gaines briefly separated from DC (and the books had the AA bullet). While Wonder Woman was in every issue but purely as administrative support and only later got to take an active role again. I guess the rule preventing heroes with their own title from holding regular membership was repealed.

Doctor Mid-Nite was another long running JSAer--but not as long as Hawkman and Atom because he didn't join until ALL-STAR COMICS 8. Starman also joined in that issue, yet he lost his membership in the JSA when they switched to all AA members. And a year later, Starman lost his spot in ADVENTURE COMICS when that book was invaded by MORE FUN rejects. Goes to show the fickle fate of so many super-heroes. And it seems as if the second banana characters like Atom and Mid-Nite were able to survive even as the big name stars were getting picked off.

Too bad Johnny Thunder and his Thunderbolt don't get more love. I first read them in the Black Canary Archive and found their stories to be great fun that was reminiscent somewhat of Disney's Aladdin. I really thought he had terrific chemistry with Dinah in those early tales.

I wish DC would offer the 1940s run of Adventure Comics for sale digitally. I love Hourman, and I'm curious if in his early appearances, he was actually super-athletic, or if Miraclo only operated like some kind of enhanced steroid and is abilities went up from there? The first few issues of All-Star Comics make it a bit ambiguous, and then he was gone.

    Does anybody have

JSA: All Stars Archives - Volume 1 from 2007 available digitally?

I believe I read somewhere that Rex's first five stories were included in that.
