Old enough to be the X-Men's parents, but they were not GRANDPARENTS to the X-Men. Magneto was a Holocaust survivor, and in 1963 the Holocaust was just 18 years ago.

Now of course the X-Men have aged slowly in all this time, but that means Magneto and Xavier should have aged slowly as well.
Magneto never had his helmet off until 1969 so it's hard to say age until then and even then it was based on art to decide age.

Ian worked for someone born in the 20s alive in 2000 and was age wise fine in X1, but by the second and third films he just looked a tad too old compared to even older looking comic versions.

McKellen is a terrific actor but I think Fassbender captured the essence of Magneto, or rather Erik Lehnsherr better. Yes, he was more of the Woobie side but his trauma over Holocaust, mother's death and being used as a weapon/scientific object was touched upon, not to mention much needed foundations between his and Charles' friendship and mutual fascination were laid. Although I find him more introverted and less interested in being a leader and commanding a vast group of people, which comic Magneto and to some extent McKellen's character definitely were. I blame it on the writing forcing him to become Apocalypse's lackey and Brotherhood of Evil Mutants not existing.

Ian was a bit too old I've always thought. Fassbender played an amazing Magneto. I can't stand the Fox/Singer-verse in just about every way but I'd love to see Fassbender about 10 years from now playing Magneto.

I will say both were good representations of the different aspects of magneto from the comics.

I see Ian as more of the magneto from x-men (1991) and to an extent Morrison's New X-Men Xorn, who killed million of humans in newyork including Jean. just awful.

I see Fassbender's Magneto as the Magneto from the Magnetos Rex series, that was in 1999?

What is most important to acknowledge is both actors are one of the very few actors that have gotten so much acclaim for their performances in a comic book movie. a rare for the comic book genre.

That what I was thinking, but I ultimately chose Michael. He was written more like comic Magneto to me.

While they're both very good, I had to give the vote to Fassbender.
What can I say but, "I love comics."

I love both actors in the role too much to choose one over the other.

McKellen was my first on-screen Magneto, but Fassbender was great in the part, too. They're equal for me.

I was on the fence until you posted this scene.

    McKellen all the way.

Theses scenes are far better IMO. Anger... This is Magneto.
