Hello folks! Today I'll be doing a review of a very recent, but underrated book: Avengers Arena by Dennis Hopeless and Kev Walker
Avengers arena follows a group of young heroes (we see several members from Avengers Academy, the X-schoold and Runaways but also some original characters) as they are being kidnapped by a former joke villain called Arcade (yes, from the game styled death traps) and forced to fight each other to the death. Yes, it's a familiar concept and on release written off as a knock off but Hopeless, supported by Walker's awesome art, creates a great, original experience with lots of drama, suspense and the evil genius of Arcade, who has been promoted from joke to one of the most dangerous and interesting villain of the MU.
It's one of the surprises of Marvel Now. It's collected in 3 trades and it's sequel, Avengers Undercover, is still going on (fingers crossed for an omnibus eh?). I recommend this to fans of the various young hero Marvel comics (like Avengers Academy and Runaways), fans of great comic fights (really, the fights are truly awesome only made better by Walker's unbelievable art) and those who are intrigued by a superpowered Hunger games scenario.
