He retired all together? I thought he was just stepping away from the Caps head coaching position.

My bad. I saw the ESPN update scrolling across the screen and it said Trotz retiring. I just looked elsewhere and it said he resigned from the Caps. The problem though is that there is only one other team without a HC, the Islanders. Of course, some team could fire their current HC and hire Trotz.

Love the thread, Whovian. Great move.

I cannot believe the Capitals didn't re-sign Trotz. Even if he won just one Cup in his entire season, the man has been putting together winning teams since his days in Nashville. He is a winner. I do not get this move at all.

    I don't get it either

Anyone want to guess at which team is drafting who? My guess:

    1. Rasmus Dahlin - Buffalo Sabres
    2. Andrei Svechnikov - Carolina Hurricanes
    3. Jesperi Kotkaniemi - Montreal Canadiens
    4. Noah Dobson - Ottawa Senators
    5. Brady Tkachuk - Arizona Coyotes
    6. Quinn Hughes - Detroit Red Wings
    7. Filip Zadina - Vancouver Canucks
    8. Oliver Wahlstrom - Chicago Blackhawks
    9. Adam Boqvist - New York Rangers
    10. Ty Smith - Edmonton Oilers

That's my guess at the top 10.

I think it had something to do with the new ownership situation.

I think that's pretty likely. I guess we will see.

Barry Trotz's resignation as Capitals' head coach is about money and respect

From what I read, the Caps weren't willing to pony up and pay Trotz the big bucks like Mike Babcock, Joel Quennville or Claude Julien, so he decided to leave. With only one opening (Islanders), perhaps Trotz might sit out the 2018-19 season and wait for something better to come along.

So...a lot of stuff is going on.

I don't know what Marc Bergevin thinking, trading Alex Galchenyuk for Max Domi, but it is in a long line of very, very questionable moves by Bergevin. Now, it can be argued that Galchenyuk never became the players the Canadiens were hoping he would become, but that is a flat out bad trade. At least make Arizona throw in a first or second rounder. WTF?!?

And now...Mike Hoffman got Das Boot from Ottawa. Given what drama his wife/fiancee/girlfriend cooked up, it was only a matter of time. Hoffman went to San Jose and then San Jose flipped him to Florida. Great player, but he wasn't going to start the season in Ottawa.

My goodness. This off-season is crazy so far.

Dahlin is definitely going #1. If I had more time, I would do my top ten. I still might before the draft

Yeah, it certainly is. Trotz is the big head scratcher for me.

I kind of like the trade for Domi. He has the chance to be very good

I think Domi is a good player, but I don't think he is good enough to be a 1-for-1. I think Galchenyuk got like 30 goals in one season alone. Whereas Domi has 36 goals over the course of 3 seasons. Domi is also only one year younger than Galchenyuk. I could see Domi being a better fit for Montreal, but man did Bergevin lose another trade.

Taylor Hall won the Hart trophy. I had him as an outside chance of winning back when we were talking about it. I didn't think he would win it though. Congrats Taylor!

Barry Trotz took the Islanders job. Not sure on the details of his contract yet.
