I wouldn't quite say that. The incursions would have happened anyway, even if they weren't the Illuminati, even if they approached things nobly and with good intent. The multiverse would have collapsed together regardless. The point was there was nothing they could have done. What matters if they had conscience and goodness left to recreate and remake the world...and that is what counts. As Valeria tells her Uncle Doom, "Don't think about the end...think of how the world began"...Doom doesn't get what that means, he headbangs to Kanye's "I am a God" instead but Reed eventually understand far too late. So you have the liferaft (which is the construct in Central Park in SW 84).

Hickman decided to take the Illuminati at their word...give them a problem that's really big, one that seems to justify their mission of "We need to man up and start acting like supervillains" which underpinned their actions in CIVIL WAR and World War Hulk and so on...and then when they come up to the trolley problem it turns out they can't do it. So actual proper supervillains like Doom come in and bail them out. It was Doom who saved the Multiverse and it was Reed who saved the Multiverse from Doom.

Actually a pretty good way of summarizing it, though it would seem at the end of the day, for all the Illuminati's posturing about being willing to do the hard, brutal, necessary things to survive and save their world, they just didn't have the heart (or lack of a heart, arguably) to follow through.

I think each faction, both the Illuminati and Doom, were faced with something that they found difficult to do. The "solution" to the Incursions was worse than a no win scenario. When you "won", billions of people on the losing planet died. With Doom, it was a smaller crisis. He had to be become a serial killer of just one man, killing as many of duplicates of Owen that he could. When told this by Owen, he said he "found no grace" in this task. He would have to kill the Molecule Man over and over again in the multiverse until he became Rabam Alal and created the Black Swans. So while both the Illuminati and Doom were doing the "heroic" thing, they found little honor in it. It was soul crushing for the Illuminati. Doom was much more pragmatic about his task, as was Namor in the Illuminati. But he later paid for that by aligning with Thanos and the Black Order.

It is pivotal. The general feeling is that they're more like inhumans than classic X-Men.

I think people are off base comparing the new X status quo to the Inhumans.

They’re honestly more more like the Eternals.
