The reaction to this trailer is cracking me up.

It seems to be creeping everyone out. But you know what, the Broadway musical creeped me out.
There came a time when the Old Gods died! The Brave died with the Cunning! The Noble perished locked in battle with unleashed Evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!
I saw and loved the Broadway musical, but... yeah, this creeps me out. They're really bungee jumping into the Uncanny Valley, there.
But it will make the Furries of the world very happy indeed.
This is too furry for me.
I think, for a certain audience, this is that special kind of porn they've been longing for all their lives.
Other than The Blues Brothers, I'm not a fan of musicals. Never had any interest in seeing this in any shape or form. But there is just something just plain unnerving about this production from looking at it. Can't put my finger on it, to quote Hank Hill, "It just ain't right." Heck even fans of the musical are majorly creeped out by this. I can't help but be reminded of an early episode of FRAISER , Niles and Fraiser were having coffee. Niles was eager to get out of the house because his wife Marris and her friends were practicing for their own production of CATS . Bunch of old money women on all fours meowing around the mansion. Plus Niles thought he saw one of the performers scenting a houseplant. Now I know what Niles was going through.
I have a feeling that trying to force an actual narrative story on Cats will be a bigger mistake than the weird furry porn. The musical was created as a fun song-and-dance revue with cute costumes and an innovative set. Grizabella was the only real plot element, and that was only to set up the big showstopping number ("Memory"). Trying to make it into some kind of involved drama will only end in tears. And not the good kind.
Now the film is being accused of white washing its star.
LOL.
You know, I've always been liberal, but this wokey-dokey nonsense will be looked back on with laughter by future generations (if there are any). It's like it's become some kind of game, finding stuff to act outraged about.
This is nowhere near as bad as when they blue-washed Zoe Saldana for Avatar or green-washed her for GotG.
I keep seeing all the negative reactions to this but to me it looks pretty amazing. The music sounded great, I love the cast and the effects look good to me.
I have a feeling they're actually leaning into the weirdness. It might work for enough people to be successful.
I saw a clip of the cast practicing a number without the CGI and I was thinking it was going to look amazing. Then the trailer came out and it totally looked horrible. (I'm sure the music will be great)
That and Jennifer Hudson is like 30 years too young to be playing Grizabella.
I imagine that the soundtrack will be amazing, but why any other singer would want to appear in the same movie as Jennifer Hudson, I don't know. Who can stand the comparison? Did DREAM GIRLS teach them nothing?
Everything else about the movie will be a sticky issue. The choreography could be top shelf, but how do we know how much is real and how much is photographic illusion? Same with the acting--the Academy isn't ready yet to reward CGI assisted performances.
