What made Donna Troy's origin story so confusing?

Actually you can't. She debuted in a Teen Titans story, but the team didn't have their own book yet. She debuted in The Brave and the Bold #60, in 1965, which was also where the Teen Titans first became a team, though Aqualad, Kid Flash and Robin had teamed up six issues prior. They then appeared in Showcase #59 before getting their own book.

I have also seen some people argue that you can interpret some of the earlier Wonder Girl appearances as being Donna Troy. Carol Strickland placed the first appearance of Donna Troy as being Wonder Woman #123 using that interpretation.

Due to Donna's creation being an error (writer mistook Wonder Girl for a sidekick when she was actually closer to Superboy), any appearances before the Teen Titans debuted are clearly intended to be the teen Diana (who was a creation of the other de-aged Diana, Wonder Tot, who nowadays is treated as the same species as Mxy and Bat-Mite, a 5th Dimensional Imp).

It took four years for Donna to even get a civilian name.

LOVE this cover, and hoping this version simplifies Donna back to her adopted Amazon roots (as was referenced in the recent Artemis special).
Happy to see that none of the horrific Finch origin is referenced on the cover, hopefully that is all forgotten now.

We will see. The point in on that cover th edisturbing element is not the return to canon of Terry Long, but the infinite earths in the background. For me, that is not a good sign.
